Charleston firefighter deaths: Memorial service held

#1 Postby Chacor » Tue Jun 19, 2007 9:01 am

A blaze has swept through a furniture store and a warehouse in Charleston, South Carolina, killing nine firefighters, officials say.

They died after the store's roof collapsed on them. The mayor said it was "a tragedy of immense proportions".

The fire began on Monday night, and was described by some witnesses as a "tornado of flames".

Two employees were rescued from the buildings. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

The mayor said the firefighters "extinguished the fire and they lost their lives fighting for the safety of our citizens".

"To lose nine is just a tragedy of immense proportions," he said.

The story gets sadder as more news comes in. The part about them saluting the fallen firemen is really sad.

Blaze at Furniture Warehouse in Charleston, South Carolina, Kills 9 Firefighters
Tuesday, June 19, 2007

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Nine firefighters died in South Carolina fighting a blaze that swept through a furniture warehouse Monday night, collapsing the building's roof upon them, in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify."

"They were heroes," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley told FOX News Tuesday. "They were concerned about people being trapped in the building. They were heroes. They were fighting the fire and the fire overwhelmed them."

Riley said the county coroner planned to disclose the names of the dead once positive identifications are made.

Two employees in the building were rescued from the blaze, which broke out at about 7 p.m. Monday in the Sofa Super Store and warehouse, but the disaster has been "difficult to fathom or quantify," he said. The cause of the fire was under investigation, but Riley said arson was not suspected.

"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Riley said at a morning news conference. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."

Overnight, firefighters, police officers and other rescue workers saluted as the bodies were carried from the warehouse.

"To lose nine is just a tragedy of immense proportions," Riley said. "To lose nine is just unbelievable."

Police Chief Greg Mullen told The Charleston Post and Courier that Fire Chief Rusty Thomas was on scene all night until the bodies of all nine firefighters were removed from the rubble.

"Chief Thomas is a true leader," Mullen told the newspaper.

Thomas met with many families of the victims Monday night.

"I can’t even imagine what the firefighters are going through, it’s just indescribable," Mullen told the Post and Courier. "The way to continue to honor the sacrifice they made is to go back to work and make sure you live up to what they would do if they were still alive. That is their legacy."

Riley said the blaze apparently started in a storage area. He was unsure whether there were sprinklers in the building.

Witnesses said the store's roof collapsed, throwing debris over about two-dozen rescue workers. Onlookers were hit with flying ash.

"It was like a 30-foot tornado of flames," said Mark Hilton, who was struck in his eye.

Daniel Shahid, a salesman at a nearby car dealership, said firefighters came in asking for towels.

"The next thing you know, we were carrying hoses, directing traffic, everybody from the dealership," he said.

Shahid said he saw firefighters rescue four people from the building.

"They were struggling. They were covered in black soot. They looked scared out of their minds," Shahid said.

He later told a cable news network the roof collapsed too quickly for anyone to escape.

"It came from nowhere," he said. "It was a standing structure and five seconds later it was on the ground."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Fire occurred not even a mile from my house. All you heard were sirens for several hours. Found out this am that one of the ones who perished was my neighbor/friend. I never saw him too much because of the hours he worked but talked with his wife and children many many times as they also live next door to one of my best friends. They walk by my house on a daily basis just about.

Please keep these families in your prayers.

Those folks cannot be thanked enough for the sacrifices they make each and every day! It seems like a crime that in many cities across America they are also paid the most miniscule of salaries! They obviously value our lives more than we value theirs! :(

The article below is quoted from http://www.charleston.net which is our local paper's website. It has been updated with the names of the deceased.

Brad Baity was the man I knew. Truly a great loss for our community as a whole. I wasn't able to make it to their house today but will go by there tomorrow to pay my respects. Just too difficult for me today as it has me pretty shaken up. Like I said before, not that I knew him all that well but it still has hit close to home and all I could think about today was his children and wife. My friend who lives next door went by there earlier this evening and said the kids are doing fine. Probably because it hasn't sunk in yet even though they have been told what is going on.

Fortunately, firefighters are a brotherhood so to speak and every time I have looked over at his house, there have been at least 5-10 cars of people with his wife and children.

Nine firefighters died Monday night in a fire that destroyed the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley.

It was the worst single loss of firefighters since 9/11, according to a spokesman from the U.S. Fire Administration, which tracks fire deaths and injuries.

"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said at a news conference this morning. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."

The firefighters who perished in the blaze were:

Captain William "Billy" Hutchinson, 48, 30 years of service; Captain Mike Benke, 49, 29 years of service; Captain Louis Mulkey, 34, 11.5 years of service; Engineer Mark Kelsey, 40, 12.5 years of service; Engineer Bradford "Brad" Baity, 37, 9 years of service; Asst. Engineer Michael French, 27, 1.5 years of service; Firefighter James "Earl" Drayton, 56, 32 years of service; Firefighter Brandon Thompson, 27, 4 years of service; Firefighter Melvin Champaign, 46, 2 years of service.

The collapsed remains of the Sofa Super store on Savannah Highway is visible from the air Tuesday. Nine firefighters with the Charleston Fire Department lost their lives Monday evening battling the blaze.
Riley said that in his time as mayor, to his knowledge, the city has not lost a firefighter in the line of duty.

No arson is suspected, Riley said, but the State Law Enforcement Division and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.

Police Chief Greg Mullen said Fire Chief Rusty Thomas was on scene all night until the bodies of all nine firefighters were removed from the rubble.

"Chief Thomas is a true leader," Police Chief Greg Mullen said.

Just before 8 a.m. Savannah Highway reopened to traffic.

Chief Thomas met with many families of the victims last night at Station 11.

"I can’t even imagine what the firefighters are going through, it’s just indescribable," Mullen said. "The way to continue to honor the sacrifice they made is to go back to work and make sure you live up to what they would do if they were still alive. That is their legacy."

At about 7:45 p.m., the front of the store collapsed and sent a roaring ball of burning debris rolling above about two dozen rescue workers' heads.

Hundreds of onlookers were pelted with hot ash.

Mark Hilton of Ridgeville said he could feel the sting as a piece of ash went into an eye. He was mesmerized by the sight of the large furniture store and its adjacent warehouse ablaze.

"It was like a 30-foot tornado of flames," he said.

Riley said he thought all of the store workers made it from the building. At least one was taken to the hospital, he said.

Charleston Fire Department Chief Rusty Thomas embraces a colleague Tuesday after a news conference where officials announced the names of the nine firefighters who died in the Sofa Super Store fire in West Ashley on Monday.
Daniel Shahid, a salesman at nearby Morris Nissan, said he was working when a firefighter came inside and asked for towels.

"The next thing you know, we were carrying hoses, directing traffic — everybody from the dealership," he said.

He said he watched as firefighters brought four people out of the building.

"They were struggling. They were covered in black soot. They looked scared out of their minds."

The store, at 1807 Savannah Highway, caught fire shortly after 6:30 p.m. About 30 employees work there daily, according to a business spokesman.

Sylvester Washington, an employee, had just left.

His parents had come inside to look at furniture. They then drove to a nearby neighborhood to look at a house. When they drove back by the store about 15 minutes later and saw the fire, Washington searched the crowd for his co-workers.

A frantic Toni Tyrrell arrived about 7:30 p.m. to look for her husband, Jonathan, who was working at the store Monday. She was concerned because he was not answering his cell phone.

Washington's father, Chase Sandred, watched as two firefighters leaped through ground-floor windows to escape to safety.

"I guess it was just too much for them," he said.

Dozens of firefighters from agencies around the region worked late into the night to control the fire. Savannah Highway was blocked by all the equipment. Rain began to fall at about 11 p.m., creating additional smoke during the rescue effort.

The roofs of the business had collapsed and the site was reduced to rubble.

Read today that this is the single-worse loss of firefighters in the U.S. since 9/11.

A memorial service is taking place in South Carolina for nine firefighters killed in a blaze on Monday.

The men died when a fierce fire caused the roof to collapse at a furniture store and warehouse in Charleston.

A day of mourning has been declared in the town, marking what was the biggest single loss of life in the US fire service since the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Thousands of firefighters have also come from across the US and Canada to pay tribute to their comrades.

The service, taking place in a 9,000-seat arena in the town, was also to be broadcast to giant screens outside and in a nearby convention centre.

'Affects us all'

Speaking at the ceremony, Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley paid tribute to the town's "nine heroes" and their courage and dedication to public service.

The men, who worked together and were friends, ranged in age from 27 to 49.

"When we lose one, it affects us all," Virginia firefighter Lt James Diego, who had travelled with several colleagues to Charleston for the service, told the Associated Press news agency.

"Most of us have suffered some sort of loss in our careers, and it's a way to pay back the people who supported us when we had a line-of-duty death."

Also among those expected to attend were two Republican presidential hopefuls, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

A procession of about 100 fire trucks passed through the town before the start of the service.

Investigations into the cause of the fire and the sudden roof collapse are continuing.

They also had a streaming video of the whole service. The Governor was there as was Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff. Very solemn mood to say the least and it really hits home. My neighbor's wife and remaining family had a full escort of firemen this morning.

Also found out last night that a man who lives across the street from me had a cousin who also perished.

Truly a devastating time for all involved...People are actually driving nicely and the "hustle and bustle" seems to have taken a back seat around the whole town.

They will never be forgotten!

Unfortunately, this forces a realization that we take these life-saving services for granted. Many firefighters serve as first responders and health clinics; their influence extends beyond their name. They have saved lives under endless circumstances, and they have provided care and invaluable methods for recovery. I can never offer too many thanks for all emergency services.

This is quite depressing. Let them rest in peace. Although I missed the ceremony, I want to express my thanks to them. They have accomplished endless goals for the lives of others.
