Ill be leaving soon-again!!

#1 Postby JonathanBelles » Mon Jun 18, 2007 8:20 pm

I will be attending Boys State this year. I will be leaving June 24th and will be returning on June 30th. I may also head over to Orlando upon returning, so I may not truly be returning until July 1st. Boys State is a mach government sponsored by the American Legion. I was chosen by my schools counselors and principals, 1 of 6 to be picked. Of those 6 picked, 2 were sent to the American Legion for interviews. I easily made it through the two interviews and will be going with 51 other Seniors form Pinellas County into Boys State.
Boys State is a fictional 51st state, with governors, mayors, police, judges, and citizens totaling 350 from Florida. I will run for an office and then fulfill that duty to the fullest extend of my power. I'm not sure what I will run for yet. There are two parties and four legislative bodies. The Nationalist and the Federalist party. The Senate and Forum, The House of Reps and the Assembly. I will be randomly placed into a party and run for a position in the legislature if I so choose. I can also run for a spot in the Executive as a governor or mayor, or a Judiciary as a judge or lawyer. I will be writing bills and debating on bills too. 25% of all bills are written into Florida State Law. If you have any ideas on bills, let me know. I have an appointment with the real Governor, Charlie Christ, on Thursday, June 28th. I will be going to Tallahassee, FSU to be exact. I will travel and be in the Capitol for two days.
I have the possibility of getting three scholarships. One for having a military father (10 out of 350), a 2 for 2 scholarship to Tallahassee Community College for 2 years, and FSU for two years (50 out of 350), and the hardest scholarship to get is if I become selected to go to Boys Nation, where I can get an $18,000 scholarship to any college in the US (2 out of 350). I am only expecting to maybe get the 2 for 2.

I do not know if I will have computer access or the time to access the internet, so I am posting this today.

Jonathan, that's a great experience. My daughter went to Girl's State in West Virginia many years ago. You'll love it. :flag:

Wow, that sounds so incredibly cool!! There is a new TV show called Kids Nation I think that has the same premise. FSU ROCKS! My oldest son is a junior ther and he LOVES Tallahassee! Keep us posted if you can. I can't wait to hear about this adventure when you are through!

Yeah, jonathan! that sounds like a really cool experience, you are more than capable. My cousin (who is from Florida) goes to FSU and is majoring in Political Science, and i've only heard good things about FSU!

when you get back, make sure you fill us in on all your experiences. And good luck with the scholarships!

Didn't Bill Clinton attend Boys Nation back in the '60s and end up meeting JFK? Or am I thinking of someone else?

He might have, but I would have to do some research on it.

I'm still somewhat out of it tonight, still blowing my nose. At this point I am running around in circles unpacking and re-packing because........

I'm going on the road again! :cheesy: :ggreen: :cheesy: This time I will be going back to Universal, leaving tomorrow and coming back on Thursday. This will be my first 4th of July in Orlando, and probably going to be the best. I' ve got the preferred pass, so we are planning on spending half of the day tomorrow in the park and all day Wednesday in the park. I landed a 5 star hotel for both days on site for 75% off! This is going to be one of my best vacations ever. 8-)
