When Did Hotmail Upgrade To 2 Gigs?

For as long as I can recall, Hotmail always allotted just 2 MB of storage to their free accounts. Also, free account holders were required to login every 30 days or lose stored messages. These were the main reason I decided to get a Gmail account.
Now it seems the 30 day restriction has been removed and storage has increased to 2 Gigs.
When did this happen?
