Cajun Town Bans Saggy Pants

DELCAMBRE, La. (AP) - Sag your britches somewhere else, this Cajun-country town has decided.
Mayor Carol Broussard said he would sign an ordinance the town council approved this week setting penalties of up to six months in jail and a $500 fine for being caught in pants that show undergarments or certain parts of the body.

Broussard said he has nothing against saggy pants but thinks people who wear them should use discretion. "It's gotten way out of hand out here," he said.

Albert Roy, the councilman who introduced the ordinance, said he thought the fine was a little steep and should be more in the $25 range, but he still favored the measure.

"I don't know if it will do any good, but it won't hurt," Roy said. "It's obvious, and anybody with common sense can see your parts when you wear sagging pants."

Broussard's advice for people who like their pants to hang low: "Just wear it properly. Cover your vital parts. I mean, if you expose your private parts, you'll get a fine. If you walk up and your pants drop, you get a fine. They're better off taking the pants off and just wearing a dress."

Personally I think this is the dumbest thing I've heard. Dress codes are supposed to be for school and the workplace. I don't like the baggy pants style but people can wear whatever they want, it's America.Talk about a waste of tax dollars. I mean with all the major problems that Louisiana has had in recent years, THIS is what the local governments are wasting their time on???


And if they are going to fine guys over this then why don't they fine women who show their thongs or too much cleavage or the ones that have their butt hanging out the tiny shorts?

I can't figure out why someone wants to wear pants so low they have to continuously hold them up while they walk...and that belt they wear? what good does that do?

A coworker was telling me that these low pants originated in prison. Those who wore them low like that had a "partner, boyfriend, girlfriend" and other inmates knew to leave them alone. Now i don't know if it is true or not, just repeating what she told me. She also told of a story of someone who had committed a crime, was fleeing but got caught because his low rider pants fell down and he tripped and fell! lol

It is kind of funny seeing suspects running from the cops and trying to hold up their baggy pants at the same time. It probably makes them easier to catch.

Maybe baggy pants should be required for anybody with a criminal background.

This is almost a violation of your Constitutional rights. I don't support this kind of dress code, nonetheless, because I don't like it it doesn't mean that other doesn't have to like it either. I agree that on schools, restaurants, and other places this kind of dress code shouldn't be allowed, but on public places, that is wrong. We should focus on other problems that society in general has and try to resolve them, but dress code???

I'd have to agree with Hurakan and opalstorm on this one. just because you don't like a certain type of clothing (hey, I think it looks stupid too), doesn't give you the right to force people not to wear it. there's no nudity, no indecent exposure, it just looks stupid. And we have bigger things to worry about than how stupid someone's clothes look.

It makes me sick when I see a kid with pants on that are about 10 sizes too big and they are around his thighs and all you see is his behind in very thin boxer shorts....you don't have to imagine anything, its right there to be seen. This disgusts me!

CajunMama (aka Frick) I was watching an episode of cops when that happend with the guy running from the police and his pants fell down and he tripped and that is how they caught him!

Our small deep south community attempted a similar ordinance. We also got a noise ordinance passed.......ya know the cars that you can hear the stereo a 1/4 mile away? Along with that we tried to enforce R-1 zoning.....stopping folks from parking big rig commercial trucks on their front lawns. And to top it all off....we attempted to ban young men with bulldogs from roaming our streets at night.

WE HAVE FAILED MISERABLY ON ALL COUNTS.

I keep my pants pulled up. I park our trucks at the shop, not at home. My truck radio is never played to loud. I'm not into owning animals just to fight them.

I agree that there are lots of things that people do that is annoying, like the ones described above. Nonetheless, governments must focus first on important stuff like education, healthcare, insurances, poverty, employments, salaries, taking care of the elderly, and more. After all the important stuff is handled, then we go to minor problems like where to park your car, how loud the music is, how low can your pants go, and more. The obstacle with the important stuff is that sometimes it's so difficult to resolve the problems that Congresspersons and other goverment workers clean their hands by focusing on minor problems and still say they are working towards the greater good.

I have to agree. Isnt that somehow put into the 1st amendment? I dont wear baggy pants, but most people at my ago do. As long as I cant see anything, I am ok with baggy pants.

While extremely baggy pants do look dumb, I'd be beyond furious if my community was wasting its time and MY money on something like this.

Actually, over 75% of the younger generation that we arrest are wearing the "Plumber smile pants"
