Marine Dies Saving Children
Carteret - 5/7/2007

A Cherry Point marine died over the weekend saving two children in the water off Atlantic Beach.

Military officials say Master Sergeant Michael Wert was at the beach with his family Saturday, when they noticed two boys having a hard time in the ocean.

In the process of rescuing them, Wert drowned.

He leaves behind a wife and three children.

Cherry Point is holding a memorial service in his honor Wednesday at 10 a.m.

God bless him, sad story indeed. They had an annoucement about him on the P.A. System on Monday, informing everyone of the memorial service, at least one of his children is a freshmen at my school. I wonder why the boys were in the water to begin with...ugh I was down there at Fort Macon Saturday and remember some sirens, but thought it was going to the hospital with a car wreck vitcim or something :(

Yes, that was a horrible accident. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Just like that, his life was ended.

I heard about that. It makes me so mad, what were those kids doing in the water and where were their parents. I hope this stays with those kids for the rest of their lives.

If I remember correctly, witnesses said he did not hesitate to jump in after he saw them struggling against the surf. God bless him, and I hope he is enjoying Heaven right now, drowning is one horrible death.
