Ladies - Mammogram results - UPDATE

#1 Postby Stephanie » Thu Mar 29, 2007 7:54 pm

Hi! Has any one here been called by their gynecologist a couple of days after having a mammogram to say that you need further testing?

My report came back saying that they didn't see anything suspicious, but they want to do more testing on the left breast to make sure there isn't a "developing density" there - that it was probably the film instead. I've gone to this Radiology place before and they always check the films before you leave from having your mammogram done to make sure that they came out alright. I know that this happens to a lot of women, some that I know only to find that it was a false alarm. Better safe than sorry, but needless to say, I'm on pins and needles. My next appointment is April 10 and I have to get a diagnostic mammogram and an ultrasound.

Would anyone like to share their experience?

Thanks for listening!

I dont want to scare you but my mother "had a problem with the film." 2 weeks later, she was undergoing chemotherapy. I wish you luck. Keep us posted.

Thank you. I know that it can be that. Is your mother alright?

This happened to me on 4/1/02 (yeah I remember the date was told the same day that I have cervical cancer and needed knee surgery  , things always happen to me on 4/1)and I thought at first it was an April Fool's joke...I had to get a Breast MRI and go to a Breast Specialist, they found 2 lumps and 2 cysts real deep and at that time all they said was to get a mammo every 6 months; as of last Oct no change, which is a good thing! I was told though that I have very fibrocystic breasts so I just have to keep an eye on things :D

Good luck Steph!

Hi Stephanie, sorry to hear you're getting sucked into the Medical System. Always such fun, isn't it? My sister had the same thing happen to her, and it amounted to absolutely nothing. Zip, zero, nada. Just means making a lot more breast flapjacks on the cold vice press yet again. Ouch! Hoping it will go for you the same way it did for my sister.

Same thing happened to my mother and it was nothing. Just bad film or bad techie. The problem is her blood pressure went through the roof for nothing worrying and waiting. I had the same thing happen but the original test result said that there was a forty percent chance of cancer and they wanted to do more films and sono. The second set of films recommended a biopsy be done. It was cancer. I had a lumpectomy with no radiation and no chemo and I'm still here seven years later. I wouldn't recommend this route to others. I did extensive research and took the chance on the odds being in my favor. The physicians and radiologist wanted a complete mastectomy even though there wasn't any involvement in the nodes. My aunt had a similar experience about seven years ago, they wanted to do a mastectomy (in her seventies). I told her to make an appointment for a great cancer treatment facility in Tampa and the oncologist said she could watch and wait. She has mammos and fine needle biopsy's every six months and so far no cancer.
Most of the time when they request another test be done it has to do with the density of the breast tissue. Mammos aren't very good for premenopausal women or women like my sister with very large breasts. I will be praying for you that its a glitch.

I had a scare once too. I was in the habit of getting my annual mammogram at the mobile unit since it was more convenient. Then one of my scans came back with a suspicious area. I was freaking out! I had to go into the hospital's radiology dept. for a more detail mammogram. I was on pins and needles until I heard the second one came back negative. I was told that sometimes the imagining machines in a mobile unit are not as good as the hospital ones. And from then on it was suggested I make my appts. at the hospital. But I was very scared, awaiting results. This was oh, at least 10 years ago.

I'll be hoping and praying for the best here Stephanie. I will say that your experience isn't that uncommon. I've heard of many women rescheduled for another mammogram, only to find out it was negative. Sometimes I think they're just being thorough and not always confirming anything suspicious.

Hugs!

Mary

My Mom and my aunt both had this happen. The second testing was perfectly normal.

I've never had a mamogram......

Pburgh...you NEED to get them!! *Taps foot*

Thanks everyone for your responses. As they say, if it is caught early enough you survival rate is 98% and it seems that those here that have had to have surgery, etc. are doing just fine.

Miss Mary - I used to get them at a mobile unit that came to my old casino, the Tropicana. I switched about 2 years ago to a local radiology company that has been around for decades and I've used them before for other things. As I said before, a lot of other women I know have had the same scare only to have nothing going on at all.

It's definately a wake up call - another one of those "it happens to everyone else" and then suddenly it hits home.

Anyway, thanks again and I'll let you know what happens!

I never had a mammogram yet. But, my mom had to go through an ultrasound because it picked up an anormality. Turned out to be nothing, just fibroids.

I have to get a followup in 6 months.

I saw the original film and what they were looking at. They took three more magnified images and it still showed up - I saw those as well when they asked me to come in for one more picture. I then had an ultrasound, but the tech couldn't find it. The doctor that read my results felt comfortable enough to have me go home and get a follow up mammogram in 6 months since whatever it is is just a few millimeters and the follow up will catch if it has changed at all. It could still be tissue, scar tissue, etc.

I can be an impatient person and I want to know what the heck it is now. I wish it was just a blip in the film. :(

That's a long 6 months. It's easy for the doctor to say wait 6 months but i know if it were me i'd be worrying the entire time, wanting to know a definate answer. I pray that nothing shows up in 6 months. Best of luck to both of you.

sometimes it helps to pressure the doctor about the results.... In most cases, they know the results that day or the next and love to keep you on pins and needles about knowing.... (they did that for my MRI... and talked with other docs and they told me to call the next day... the results were in.

IMO, 6 months is way to long to wait.
