GET IT OFF YOUR CHEST

#1 Postby Pburgh » Fri Jul 11, 2003 5:54 pm

Well, I had the week from Hell. I feel underpaid, overworked and generally used and abused. Wow!!!!! I feel better just putting that into print!!!!!

I was wondering if a topic like this would be good. A place to vent, a place to yell, a place to cry or scream or just make a statement. You might not get a response from anyone and then again, you might get the word of comfort that you are seeking. Maybe just someone saying, " things will be better tomorrow".

I promise that too. :)

I had an awesome week. :D I won't go into it though since this is a ranting thread.

In reality, if I could vent about one thing - it'd be that d*** refrigerator!

I'm sorry to hear about the bad week you are having Karan! Vent all you want!

Fortunately, I really don't have anything I need to vent right now...but I probably just jinxed myself!! :o

Many times it takes alot for me to go off. There's things that are going on at work regarding co-workers and things, but it's just the normal BS that after awhile you tend to get used to.

That's just how I am Karan. Many times when I get upset, I internalize it and tend to get quiet and don't want to talk about it (i.e. relive it). I does literally drain me and I need to recharge my batteries. I think that part of it too is that I'm trying to figure out what I may have done wrong or what I may have misunderstood. It's also a protection feature for me emotionally as well.

Well, now you have a place to internatize it. Type it !!!! Rationalize it, type it, review it, don't worry about the reponse. This is your sounding board!!!!

Vent-prone

#13 Postby GalvestonDuck » Fri Jul 11, 2003 10:10 pm

OK, here's my vent. It's about ignorant people, posting on other boards (Yahoo news, AOL, so forth) under the weather forums, ranting on about those of us who live in hurricane-prone areas. They're either calling us crybabies because we need to evacuate or idiots because we rebuild after a storm and continue to live there. Or they post crap about how Texas and her rednecks need to be washed off the face of the map (because they're Bush-haters and they think all us Southerners on uneducated hicks) or how New Orleans is the toilet bowl of the South (only reason it's dirty is because those same ranters are usually the tourists who come down there, party, barf in the streets, and then go home again, leaving their messes for New Orleanites to clean up).

Some of them argue "Why stay somewhere you know for sure there will be a disaster?" Well, duh. We DON'T know. Are we all supposed to move from the coast just because a hurricane MIGHT hit there? That would move everyone from Maine down to Florida along the eastern seaboard, all those of us in the Gulf from western Florida on over here to Texas, and then all the folks from Washington state down to California (yeah, I know...not the same impact on west coast...but still, nothing's impossible). And how about how far inland many major storms travel, causing flooding? We'd all be packing into the heartland. But then, we can't live there cuz there might be a tornado. Let's all move north. No, wait...they have blizzards and their roofs cave in! Earthquakes, mudslides, forest fires, sinkholes, cave-ins, ice storms. It would be hard to find one "safe" location where you would NEVER have to worry about a natural disaster. And then, if we did all move to that safe spot (as if it would be feasible), we'd have overcrowding, disease, and crime. And one heck of a perfect target for Osama or Saddam. Talk about disaster.

I'll keep my happy, hurricane-watching butt right here on this island, thank you very much.

Vent over. :D

Hey GalvestonDuck, don't forget flooding, hailstorms, and windstorms, which we get in this area.

Attagirl PBurgh! Better to let it out. Now all you have to do is figure out how to make it better when you head back in the trenches next week!

As manager of our whole operation, most people who work for me think they want my job. But I must confess, I can have it up to my eyeballs with corporate decisions and structure and beaurocracy that preaches teamwork and can't talk to the person who obviously is in the same room with them. Usually when I get into a heated conversation with my boss, the President of Operations, it is about some position they've taken, followed by the one I've taken...all because I'm passionate about the people who work for me, and the corporate people are simply beaurocrats who don't like it when I am. Whew! Almost feel like the fire is starting again!!!

Nuff about me right now..

GalvestonDuck...a very good point. We have some family and friends who just shake their heads when we discuss living here in the desert. "Who, in their right minds, would move to a place where the temperature is over 100 degrees perhaps 100 days or more a year! Not that much different than the second-guessing people do about those who live in hurricane prone areas.

My beef with housing in hurricane prone areas is that developers know the value of oceanfront property...or oceanfront views...or oceanfront access...and they let $$$ drive projects that should otherwise be given a lot of thought before going ahead. But alas...densities grow and so do risks.

Criticizing decision makers for poor decisions might have some merit...but criticizing those who love living near the water has very little substance. So....enjoy the beach!!!

One more item to vent...push button maneuvering through telephone mazes to get to a real person. Went through it yesterday. By the time I got to where I wanted to be...I hung up on the real person.

Miss Mary

At first I thought, what do I have to vent about? Right now, the biggest thing I'd love to have is my old routine back - decent groceries in this house, yard kept up, but it's summer. And well, I've learned to accept the fact that nothing is normal in summer when you have kids around. Each day is something new! Run, run, run - raine you relate to that.

But I do have one personal gripe or need to vent and I'll sugarcoat it for the weak stomaches out there. As you all know 4 years ago I had colon cancer and a major part of my colon removed. Let's just say you just don't know how GOOD you've got it, until it's just flat out - gone. And gone for good. Have to watch what I eat carefully and traveling is hard (drinking bottled water, etc.). People are amazed that I'm still having trouble - and I like to say, well, my colon is not going to grow back! If you lost your hand, you'd have to compensate for that loss for the rest of your life. Same with my situation. Took me two years to figure all of this out and now, knock on wood, I do fairly well - when home. Vacation is another story but I'd have to say this past one was my best one yet (health wise, since 98). Can't imagine ever going to Europe or on a cruise. Or Mexico! Yikes, just give me the good ole USA right now. No wacky food for me or the thought of bathrooms being out of order on cruise ships (hubby likes to tease me with stories like that!).

Sorry if that bothered anyone. It actually felt good to say all of that! Haven't really "verbalized" my feelings in months or years. I usually just keep it inside.

Morning Mary....indeed we do have it good. My partner Tom, who has recently come through the same type of surgery, seems to be rebounding nicely with renewed energy...but he too knows how restrictive his future lifestyle changes must be.

Being thankful for a second chance, yet still realizing you can't go back...is a challenge we'd rather not face. But, both you and Tom are facing it and set the wonderful kind of example for the rest of us to follow. I mean...he just came back from a week in Alaska, and you just took a trip to Door County! Those are BIG deals! Congratulations to both of you for who you are.

Steve - as always, thanks so much for the kind words of encouragement! I don't usually put myself out there with this topic, just keeping it to myself. I long ago learned you just can't expect everyone to "get it", as you're running off to find a bathroom. They just shake their heads and I say - well, too bad you can't at least sympathize. But I say - you just don't know how good you've got it, until it's just gone! Same with my brother-in-law (went in for elective open heart surgery to have 2 valves replaced and had a massive stroke 10 days later; permanently disabled for life now). So I just give up trying to explain it all. My doc finally got me to realize I never need to apologize for my unique needs right now. For example, I'm not comfortable staying with relatives. I prefer staying in a hotel. Do I apologize for that? No way! Hold my head up high and say this is what I prefer now. It's nothing personal against them.

Well, I'm rambling. That's just so neat Tom could visit Alaska. I was so worried about him Steve. The prognosis at one time sounded almost dire - and now he's doing so well! Another success story - love stories like this!

It's great to see Galveston, Steve and Miss Mary taking advantage of this board. It is almost like a cleansing of the soul isn't it? :D
