:D

He called "Big Marty" on his way home from Dover Air Force Base at around 5:00 pm. The were able to hop a C-5 (I think) that was unfortunately taking home a soldier's body too. Marty called me and told me he was on his way down to Pomona (right outside of Atlantic City), so I met him there. Marty even brought our dog, Rudy. He looks good - THIN and really muscular. We drove to Marty Jr.'s mom's house next and surpised her since she was still at work. He's now out catching up with his friends.

Marty needs "REAL FOOD"...the more, the sooner, the better!

It's so GOOD to hear of a returning young "veteran"...there are so many more I'd want to hear about, just from this Forum alone.

Oh, one more thing...don't mention the letters M, R, and E together any time soon ("Meals, Ready-to-Eat"...three lies in one!), OK?

Be sure to tell him thanks from S2K. What a nice way to celebrate the 4th of July.

I came home from Vietnam on Dec 23, 1970...just in time for Christmas. The combination of holidays and homecomings are memory-makers!

Again...tell him thanks for us.

Thanks guys!

Bill - I'll keep that in mind! He said the first thing that he wanted to eat was a steak. After we were at his mother's for awhile, Big Marty asked him where he wanted to go and eat and he said that he wasn't really that hungry - probably from all of the excitement. They ended up stopping at Taco Bell (one of JR's favorites) and he ate that.

JR was out with his friends and then stayed at his Mom's house since he was near by and he had been drinking alittle. We're going to have alittle BBQ later on today.

JR is considered a veteran - he was overseas 110 days - the last 50 he was in Baghdad! :o I believe you need to be in active duty for 90 to be considered a veteran.

Steve - I was thinking the same thing. What a great 4th of July! It's funny too, but Marty reminded me that JR came to live with us 1 year ago today too. It seems longer than that!

Hopefully, we'll hear that Mike (Hurricanedude) has come home also.

According to American Legion (and I think the VFW as well) standards for membership, all one needs to do is be IN one of the Armed Services during specified periods of conflict (including this one, until an official "end of hostilities" declaration is made); actual combat need not be evident.

There is a host of military veterans who are ineligible for membership, due to the fact that they served during the Cold War, when there were no "overt" hostilities; thereby disenfranchising millions of servicemen and women who are accepted by the VA as "veterans"...one reason why I dropped my membership, but not the only one.

The 90-day rule was something I heard word-of mouth, but I figured I'd have a vet here that would provide me with the details.

I can understand the disenfranchisement of those that had chose to serve their country but never were in combat that they are not considered "veterans". They were "on call" for their whole military career and would've performed their duty just like those that had been called. That is not fair in my opinion.
