So my cat, Mac, has diabetes...

#1 Postby Stephanie » Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:06 pm

When I brought him for his shots in January, he had lost a couple of pounds from the previous October when I had him in to have a lump checked out. The vet said that she wanted him back in in a few months to have his weight checked again. He didn't look like he had lost weight at the time.

This morning I noticed him going to the bathroom, but not doing anything. The way he was walking concerned me as well, because his hind legs were wobbly. Marty called the vet and they had him come right in. Mac had lost another pound and the test did diagnose him with diabetes. We now have to give him shots 2 times a day after each meal. :(

You know, I told my 3 cats and Rudy after Derby died that there were to be no more sick animals. Did they listen - NAH!!!

I guess it could be a heck of alot worse but still... :(

Ah poor kitty  I always feel bad for our furred and scaly friends when they get a disease. My buddy has 2 diabetic cats and she sometimes talks about a feline diabetic forum that helps her out a lot, maybe that's an idea to check out too.

Steph I hope the shots you are giving him help. Diabetes is fairly common in cats and unlike humans cats dont have a sweet tooth. As with humans with diabetes, Mac must be especially careful not to cut or otherwise injure himself and he needs exercise on a regular basis. Give Mac a rub on the chin for me please :D

Thank you george! :D

Actually, Mac is buddies with my Boston Terrier, Rudy and they do play with each other. He also wrestles with my other cat, Gipper. He could probably use more exercise though. Anyway, thanks for the pointers!

Well, what a good mommy you are to Mac. Sorry to hear about the diabetes. We've discussed Mac before too. The poor little fellow. I'd be same way, they become like our children in fact. Keep doing what you are and I hope the shots help.

Mary

I'm sorry to hear about Mac. As Mary noted, you're a loving "mom." Years ago, my parents' terrier-mix dog developed diabetes but maintained good quality of life with daily injections.

Stephanie, i hope Mac is doing okay and the shots help him. last year Ratt was borderline diabetic, so i put him on a strict diet and playtime excercise program.. i don't know if you've tried changing his diet, but it may help him out. Purina One weight control is the only food that helped Ratt lose weight.

Stephanie, my brother had a cat who was a diabetic. He gave him shots and the cat did very well for several years. You definitely are a good Mommy. ((HUGS)

Thanks everyone! :D

He was "perkier" this morning, though I couldn't feed him right away with the others because Marty is taking him to the vet at noon. The techs had to see him 4 hours after his shot. It wasn't difficult to give it to him, the syringe though makes it alittle difficult to get the insulin out of the bottle. Practice makes perfect!

HG - we do use the Purina One weight control for all of them. Actually, Mac's weight loss was a GOOD THING in disguise. He WAS 17 lbs and now is 13 lbs. He is built large though.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes.
