My fil has been having problems since October and I wonder when we went up there in November if something was wrong. Anyway his family doctor finally sent him to Emery in Atlanta and it is official. He has prostrate Cancer. A couple of years ago he had Bladder cancer and underwent treatments for it. Now this! I know it is treatable but he has the worse attitude about it. Talking to him you would think he was dying tomorrow. I have talked to my sil who works at Emery and she said it is in the early stages and is very treatable which is good news. But fil attitude is down. Please keep him in your prayers and my mil who is having to deal with this too. He is not real nice when he is sick. I really feel for her because she is the one having to take care of him.

I'm so sorry to hear the news. Being a cancer survivor myself I always feel compelled to guide caregivers and/or newly diagnosed cancer patients. There are many wonderful resources available online now. One site I've found useful is WebMD. Another would be the American Cancer Society and yet another is the American Institute for Cancer. Any internet search engine will bring up many links and you can sift thru them.

That one word can literally turn a patient and his/her family's world completely upside down. He will go thru many stages - shock, denial, anger, and hopefully resolve is the best word I like to use - resolve to make this situation the best it can be. In other words - fight and fight with all he has. Since he's had cancer in the past, perhaps what worked best for him will work again. A positive attitude is so important!

I wish you all the very best.

Mary

Thanks and thanks for the info. I really felt bad for my husband. I could tell he was really worry about his dad. I haven't talk to my mil this weekend so I don't know how he is doing. I emailed my sil but have not heard from her. I am hoping I will hear from her tomorrow morning.

Prayers coming from the Burgh for your family and inlaws. Sounds like he's been thru quite a bit and is totally frustrated and mad. I'm praying that God will give your MIL strength and patience to deal with him. ((HUGS)) for her.

Its very difficult for a patient when they have a second bout with cancer. I would be very concerned since he had the bladder cancer. Make sure its not a metastatic cancer from the initial bout with the bladder cancer. If its a new cancer and caught in the early stages then with a positive attitude he should do okay. Please understand that Prostate cancer sometimes has some very bad side affects even when you are cured. Does he like comedies? Send him some videos that will cheer him up. Some of the old slap stick comedies appeal to a certain generation (3 stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Our Gang).

Thanks everyone. Cookiely~he loves comedies and going to the movies. One of his favorite movies was Meet the Fockers...to the point I had to see it.

We think it is a new bout but I am not sure. I still haven't talk to my sil since Saturday. Still waiting to hear from her. When dh gets home I think I am going to call them tonight.
