Just wondering if anyone would know what a basic health insurance plan will cost. Want to separate myself from my mother's plan due to complications that arised over Christmas (plus, I will be off of that in a year or two anyways) and do not want to go through the University, as it costs more than $1200 per year there

Let's put it this way. I pay $20.00 per week out of my paycheck for single coverage for my insurance through Horizon BC/BS. I know that for my place of employment it costs them a couple of thousand per employee each year.

You're better off going through a group policy since the premiums that you will pay will be less. I think $1,200 is a good price to pay.

Derek, that $1200 a year is a pretty good deal if the coverage is decent. I have great insurance through work with BC/BS..but pay almost three times that amount. I voucher the BC/BS bill for my company; my payment covers most of it but not all.

I agree with all of the above. $100/month is very reasonable. Anything cheaper than that (if it even exists) is going to kill you with the exclusions, co-pays, etc.

Here's another thought: If you go with a group plan through the univ, there will be univ personnel there to help you with problems, etc. There will also be the weight of the group plan to prevent the ins co. from shirking thier obligations. If you buy an individual plan, it's you against the ins. co. In that scenario, if they interpret the plan differently than you, it's "Good Luck."

And another thing: A group plan provides guaranteed insurability. If you have a catastrophic health care event, the group plan won't drop you the next year. An individual plan may not guarantee that they'd keep you on for subsequent years.

And another thing yet: Whatever plan you are looking at, make sure that the health care providers in your area accept it.

$1200 per year isn't bad, if the coverage is enough. As a healthy young male, you shouldn't have to pay more than $100 - $150 per month.
