AMMAN, Jordan - An explosion shook the Grand Hyatt hotel in Jordan's capital late Wednesday, and witnesses saw smoke rising from the building. A police official said some people had been killed, "and there are many wounded."
An American businessman who was at the hotel when the explosion occurred, said a "bomb that went off in the lobby." He declined to identify himself.
Police said the cause of the explosion was unknown.
A black cloud of smoke was seen rising from the building in the commercial Jebel Amman district following the blast at about 8:50 p.m. (1:50 p.m. EST).
Ambulances were seen rushing to the hotel.
An American businessman who was at the hotel when the explosion occurred, said a "bomb that went off in the lobby." He declined to identify himself.
Police said the cause of the explosion was unknown.

AMMAN, Jordan - Explosions hit three hotels in the Jordanian capital Wednesday night, and at least 12 people were killed.
The first blast occurred at about 8:50 p.m. at the luxury Grand Hyatt hotel, popular with tourists and diplomats. An Associated Press reporter at the hotel counted seven bodies being taken away. Police said there were many others injured.
A few minutes later, police reported an explosion at the Radisson SAS Hotel a short distance away. Police said five people were killed and at least 20 wounded.
Another explosion was reported at the Days Inn Hotel, and police said there were casualties.

nystate wrote:Jordan was supposed to be a safe place to visit...as was London, Madrid, NYC and Washington. Just goes to show that no place is safe anymore...
I've never really considered Jordan to be "safe"... being next to Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia, especially compared to the other cities you mentioned.

Maj. Bashir al-Da'aja said officials believe all three blasts were carried out by suicide bombers. The explosions indicated the involvement of al-Qaida, which has launched coordinated attacks on high-profile, Western targets in the past, a police official said.

I guess it would be safe next to other cities in the region. Cairo and Sharm el Sheikh didn't have the safest reputations, however I never felt in danger there. Amman was supposed to be safer even than Egypt...still not as safe as an American city, but if you look at who its neighbors are (Tel Aviv/Jerusalem/Luxor/Sharm and more recently Beirut) then it wouldn't seem that bad.
You're right, though. Jordan is probably nowhere near as safe as DC, London, or NYC, and probably is on the same level as Madrid.
