Candy Corn... when I was a kid, couldn't stand it. Hated getting it while 'treating, and was always trading it off for anything I could get. Later in life, it now seems such a magical part of those times. I will eat some here and there, mostly because in this way I am again ten years old, running through the moonlit streets with my friends who are all gone now. Thanks for this post - it stirred a real moment for me, even as Wilma is soaking us outside (Orlando, by OIA).

As a kid, I used to bite off each row or color, one by one. What happened.....now I just grab a small handful!!! Of course I was skinny-skinny back then. Guess I need to go back to eating the rows off - slowly!

My kids love candy corn. It's not my first choice in candy, probably plain old bubble gum is, but it's still on my top 10 list.

I've always loved candy corn among many other candies. :) In fact my Mom decorated some iced (Pillsbury) sugar cookies with some for eyes and noses the other night! :D

Mary, I still do that!!! Unfortunately I am not skinny skinny anymore either! ( not even close  ) I also bite my m&m's in half. My husband thinks I am nuts. I bite my goldfish in half so they look like two fish. ( I think I just figured out why I am not skinny anymore!!!!! too many snacks!!!)

No, there are three of us. I've always eaten each color separately!!!! I love to put them in a bowl with beer nuts. OMG how yummy is that. The sweet and salt together.

To tell you the truth I eat corn on the cob the same way - two rows at a time.

Me either; my 6 year old loves it though - and she eats each color separately too.

The only thing i use candy corn for is to stick the fat end of 2 pieces on my front two teeth to make me look goofy! Usually good for some chuckles! Other than that i stay away from candy corn. Give me the smarties, tootsie roll midgees, gum and reece cups!

Candy corn can be useful in the sense of its better than nothing in a starvation situation. :D

My mother's birthday was 18 OCT...she always insisted on a chocolate-covered cake with candy corn decoration on it.

That effectively killed any hope of my developing a taste for the stuff...gimme WINTERGREEN LOZENGES every time (or Bob's Original Candy Canes at Christmas).

Okay, that makes 4 of us now, that bite off the different candy corn colors first....azsnowmanDennis, weathermom/Loren), Pburgh/Karan and yours truly. What can we call ourselves....the Fab Four? That's so bad....he he

I can relate to someone saying candy corn give them a sore throat. If I eat too much, the same thing happens. Don't ask me why, I just always thought they were pure sugar maybe! Guess that's why I ate the individual colors first....LOL

Like Oreos (where you unscrew them and eat the middle first), candy corn is to be eaten one color at a time. Doesn't it say that on the package?

I like the idea that it is a no-fat candy (even though it is high in sugar and calories!)

Tastes better this time of year than any other time.

How is Candy Corn Made?
In 1900, it was the job of many men to produce candy corn for eight months of the year.

Sugar, corn syrup and other ingredients were cooked into a slurry in large kettles. Fondant and marshmallow were added to give a smooth texture and bite. The 45-lbs of hot candy was poured into buckets called runners. Men dubbed stringers walked backwards pouring the candy into cornstarch trays imprinted with the kernel shape. It took three passes to make the white, yellow and orange colors. Originally, candy corn was delivered by wagon in wooden boxes, tubs and cartons.

The process of making candy corn is very similar today, but now machines do most of the work. Manufacturers use a method called the corn starch molding process. A tray containing depressions is filled with corn starch. Candy corn is made from the bottom to the top and in three-color passes. First, the depression is filled one quarter full with yellow syrup and allowed to partially set. Next, the orange syrup is added. The mold is then topped off with the white syrup and is cooled. The candy now can gel together. After is it has finished cooling, the trays are emptied and the little candy corns are ready to be eaten.
