Nicolas Cage's New Baby Named After 'Superman'

POSTED: 12:32 pm EDT October 3, 2005
UPDATED: 12:39 pm EDT October 3, 2005

LOS ANGELES -- It's a bird, it's a plane, it's another strange celebrity baby name.

Nicolas Cage is a big fan of "Superman" and has now named his new son Kal-el, which is the name Superman was given when he was born on Krypton. Kal-el Coppola Cage was born Monday.

Cage is a nephew of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.

Kal-el is the first child for Cage, 41, with his wife, Alice. They've been married for a little over a year. It was the third marriage for Cage and the first for his new wife, who was 20 when they were wed. They met when Cage visited a Los Angeles restaurant where she was working as a waitress.

Cage has another son from a previous relationship.

He was previously married to Lisa Marie Presley and actress Patricia Arquette.

If you look at the original writers of Superman, both Jewish, and use Hebrew as the basis for the name, "KAL-EL" translates (roughly) as "God of (or in, or from) the future".

Yep, the poor tyke will have a LOT of grief over his moniker.

Can you just picture all of these children in the same class someday?

You'd have Apple, Coco, Kal-el, Hazel, Phinnaeus, who else.......then you could have Demi's kids volunteering - Rumor, Scout!

That teacher would have to have an odd name too - Miss Trunchbull? LOL

I couldn't imagine being named after Superman. Hope this kid doesn't get picked on too harshly when he's growing up, or becomes very capable with his fists, he may need it.

Also Soleil Moon Frye of Punky Brewster fame.

I thought somewhere she had a family member named Dweezel...but haven't been able to locate that yet on Google.

I remember that movie I was ROFL for most of it. That principal was a little TOO determined to prove Ferris was ditching.

Dweezil is the son of Frank Zappa and brother to Diva, Moon Unit (probably where you got confused), and Ahmet (lucky dude who is married to actress Selma Blair). The hospital refused to put "Dweezil" on the birth certificate so Frank gave him the name of a band member (Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa) and then Dweezil legally had it changed to Dweezil when he got older. His family always called him by the D name, even though that wasn't what was on his birth certificate.

Soleil's brother is Voyagers! star Meeno Peluce and her daughter is Poet Sienna Rose Goldberg.

They just keep getting more and more strange....

I don't think so, but he definitely needs a gnose job.

Can you just ~imagine~ what crazy name Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' baby will be given? I shudder to even think what they'll come up.....

Couch?

Jump?

Obsessed?

LOL

I really like the direction Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards took with their children's names. I can't recall the new baby's name but their first child is simply named Sam. Just a simple name other celebs would have reversed the letters or something, MAS. LOL
