PoliceOne investigates claim of MS-13 "Kill an Officer Day"

Alert found unsubstantiated

Recently an e-mail indicating that the MS-13 gang has declared Oct. 30 an annual "Kill a Law Enforcement Officer Day" began circulating nationwide. After receiving several copies of the alert from across the country, PoliceOne staff began investigating the claim.

We found that the warning that cops will be specifically targeted on this day - an allegation that originated in Newport News, Va. - has not been substantiated.

In an interview with PoliceOne, Lt. David Graham, who is in charge of intelligence with the Organized Crime Unit of Newport News PD, said the informant cited in the e-mail was "re-interviewed by the Newport News Gang Unit and the information was not found credible in this case."

The alert began spreading across the country after an officer posted information on the alleged "Kill a Cop Day" threat to a Virginia Gang Investigators Association e-mail list.

"Information that comes across the list server is neither validated nor sanctioned by the Virginia Gang Investigators board," Lt. Graham said. "It is up to the users to verify this information before disseminating."

We share these findings in the interest of accuracy and in preventing unwarranted hyper-vigilance on Oct. 30. HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE: This is not to say that you should ever let your guard down, regardless of the day.

"Law enforcement officers who deal with MS-13 [members] should always consider them a threat," Lt. Graham cautions.

I've read some about the MS-13 gang in articles in a newspaper that my family took when we lived in Roanoke Rapids, NC...subscribe to it by mail now. Even Roa Rpds now has some gang activity...but fortunately so far no MS-13.

I would not put it past them with their history. The MS-13 is getting stronger in the states and the border only helps them get through. They have the attention of AQ and that should say something. Watch your 6.

Actually, the LEO's all over the Country should declare every day "Kill a MS-13 Member Day". They are terrorists after all and we are at war with terrorists.

Where do people come up with something so evil?!!? To kill anyone is just...but to target a police officer is-there are no words. God bless law enforcement - I hope these jerks get what they deserve for even thinking such a thing.

Issued from the Fort Worth Texas Police Dept.

Police officers working with the DARE program has issued this warning:
If you are driving after dark and see an on-coming car with no
headlights on, DO NOT FLASH YOUR LIGHTS AT THEM! This is a common Bloods
gang member "initiation game" that goes like this:

The new gang member under initiation drives along with no headlights,
and the first car to flash their headlights at him is now his "target".
He is now required to turn around and chase that car, then shoot and
kill every individual in the vehicle in order to complete his initiation
requirements.

Police Departments across the nation are being warned that September
23rd and 24th is the "blood" initiation weekend. Their intent is to have
all the new bloods nationwide drive around on Friday and Saturday nights
with their headlights off. In order to be accepted into the gang, they
have to shoot and kill all individuals in the first auto that does a
courtesy flash to warn them that their lights are off. Make sure you
share this information with all the drivers in your family!

Please forward this message to all your friends and family members to
inform them about this initiation ritual. You can save someone's life if
you heed to this warning.

Well,

We have a surprisingly large Latino presence here over the last five years; add the "meth capital of the US" title (some local small farmers can make more $$$ that way than with crops), and knowing that our area is a major conduit for drug smuggling (Mexico and points SW to Chicago) bids one pause.

Add that local graffiti (as read by a Federal agent within the last few months) points to a tentative identification with MS-13 elements, and...there you have it.

BTW, your "BOLO" is our "BA" ("be advised")...like a junior-grade APB, but tied into MULES (Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System) and NCIC access.

LOL! No Sir.....I'm tellin' ya, we have approx. 3000 yds of cotton twine tied to each car, each car has tin cans, the twin is attached to the tin cans and there you have "Bubba and Jethro's" communications

Seriously, NO, we do NOT have on board computers in PLPD but now SHOW LOW on the other hand DOES :grr: The teletype system is set up in dispatch.

Our new chief started on Monday, 19 Sept........it is our HOPES that he can bring us into the Modern Era of Law Enforcement instead of writing our citiations on a slab with chisel!

Eric....

BOLO = Be on the look out
ATL = Attempt to locate
BA = Be advised

Eric,

We also use:

GOA - gone on arrival
UTL - unable to locate
DV - domestice violence
DB - dirty bird (druggy, tweeker)

and THEN.....ALL the 10 codes that you HAVE to know by heart!! The 10 codes are a universial code (at least they're SUPPOSED to be) 8-) Each dept. is different, for instance, here's 3 different depts that I'm now working with in C.I. (criminal investigations) and I have to KNOW each ones 10 codes...........

PLPD
10-19 respond to station

WMAT PD
10-19 en route to

Navajo County Sheriffs
10-19 en route to

PLPD
10-76 en route to

SO...as you can see, you spend a TREMENDOUS amount of time memorizing codes

BOLO = Be on the look out
ATL = Attempt to locate
BA = Be advised

Add...

WW = Wants and Warrants inquiry on any given person (links to NCIC nationwide)
NCIC = National Criminal Information System (computer link to FBI database)
NIJ = National Institute of Justice (ultimate arbiter of law enforcement equipment/methodology standards)

And, my favorite?

GYSTGCYAIM = "Give your soul to God, 'cause your @$$ is MINE!"

Second favorite?

10-10 = Officer logged out at station, going home.

'Ten-Codes" I don't wanna hear?

10-13 = Officer in need of assistance
10-51-J_ = Shots fired, injuries by number ("J" plus number of persons/officers injured), 10-52-J_ = Fatalities

And, yes, each department has its own "Ten-Code" variant...I wonder why NIJ hasn't instituted a universal code?

Here in Az we have one standard code for an officer down/needs assistance ASAP......Code "999".....you say 999 on the air and you will have EVERY OFFICER, EVERY SHERIFFS DEPUTY, EVERY DPS within a 30 mile range to your 10-20 (position) before you let go of the mic key!

Let's see:

10-7 out of service, gone home
10-10 (here is) short break, restroom break
Code 7 meal break (doughnut run "LOL!")

I would assume with the way the world is going, there WILL be one universal 10 code system shortly.......cuz right now, it's a PAIN In the BUTT if you work multi agency!

Which in this country is exactly nothing as it should be.

Planning it=conspiracy=jail

Thinking it=nothing=nothing

Thank goodness. I don't think any of us would like to stand up in a court and defend everything we have ever thought.

Actually this one is somewhat true. We had a gang do this a few years ago here in Fayetteville, and quite a number of people were killed. What they did was have their lights turned out, and when a car pulled up next to them and the driver attempted to notify them of their lights being out, they pulled out a gun and killed the driver. Happened a few times before they were caught.
