I watced the Ready or Not special on ABC dealing with what to do in case of major disasters to be prepared. Pandemics have effected humans throughout the centuries can it happen even with our "advance medicine" we might just find out.

Natures way of controlling the human explosion on the planet. It's bound to happen sooner or later.
I pray it does not happen...

That whole article made me feel sick. Thinking about my children and family, and what we would do. It is frightening to think it could happen, but the reality is that it CAN.

I know the feeling. Katrina was a wake-up call just how fragile we really are.
That bit about Emergency Responders in NYC walking out of the meetings, simply overwhelmed, is ingrained in my brain...

This is scary. There could be people with it on this forum! It's scary to think we might get it. We could die, all my life dreams could be shattered. I still want to grow up

. Oh well, can't let these things get the better of us. Mine as well not dwell on it.

I've been following this story for quite a while. ABC news is not being alarmist. Most infectious disease scientists have been trying to raise the alarm on this for a good year now. It's no longer considered a matter of "if" so much as "when".
Probably the best thing you can do is keep track of the story and buy a case or two of 3M SARS masks. That's what I've done. Hey, if you never need them, they make great dust masks for building projects.
Oh yeah, and train yourself at being a real clean-freak.

OK wait I'm sick right now...is it the flu or cold?
I've been having a fever and I'm extremely tired, when I cough I can feel a great amount of "mucus" in my lungs, I have a sore throat.
PLEASE tell me that this is not a flu cause I went to school today!!!
I'm sorry if this is gross, but BTW this is not a joke. I'm serious. This article scares me half to death.
And my grandparents are currently visiting China, and won't be back until October.

There is no reason to panic. The H5N1 flu is not a pandemic yet. You can't catch it here in America, because it hasn't made its way here yet. The only way to catch it right now is by flying to one of the aflicted countries, hunting down a diseased bird, and spending all day licking it or something. It's not passing from humans to humans yet. If for some weird reason you had the flu right now, it'd just be the garden variety "normal" flu, and you'd probably just end up in bed for a week eating chicken-noodle soup.

Don't forget a case of disposable gloves and a case of Tamiflu if you can get it. Frankly, I don't think the Tamiflu is going to help much.

Another reason to have extra food and water on hand. If there is a medical quarintine, it will be hard to get food and water without exposing yourself to sick people, plus, supplies would dry up quickly. If it is a small geographic area, there will be medical help and supplies. If it happens over large areas, or multiple areas, that gets real iffy.

I wanted to blast this response, but it's something to think about. In the constant battle for survival, organisms are always exploiting opportunities. You look at the nature shows and there's always competition between the hunter and the prey, the host and the victim. Camoflage, defenses, trickery, parasitism - nature is heartless and takes no prisoners.
Now enter humans. Having a heart and a mind and a soul. We are compassionate, helping, caring. We heal the sick. It's the only human thing to do! But to think that humans are above nature is reaching too far. Life and death are intertwined. Life is terminal! The only question is "how are you going to go and when?"
A person needs a healthy understanding of reality to be a healthy person.
