Albertson's may sell company

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The parent company of the Albertson's grocery store chain is considering putting itself up for sale.

After reporting sales that lag some of its rivals, the Boise, Idaho-based company has announced that its board is looking at ways to increase shareholder value.

That could include selling the company's 2,500 stores operating under names that include Albertson's, Super Saver and Sav-On Drugs.

Albertsons was the leading grocery chain in Dallas-Fort Worth as recently as 2003, but has recently been losing ground to rivals Kroger, Tom Thumb and Wal-Mart.

The company has hired two firms to act as financial advisers on those options.

Albertson's remains the nation's second-largest supermarket chain after Kroger.
