Girl Killed At Boy Scout Camp By Falling Tree
Tree Was About 30 Feet Tall

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, N.J -- An 8-year-old girl has been killed at a Jersey Shore Boy Scout camp when she was crushed by a 30-foot tree that toppled onto a picnic table.

The victim and three other girls were attending a first aid class.

Joyce McFadden, a spokeswoman for Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin, said four children were brought to the emergency department. The conditions of the three other children were not immediately available.

The accident happened just after noon at the Joseph Citta Scout Reservation in New Jersey's Pinelands National Preserve near Brookville.

Authorities said that the 8-year-old girl and the three other girls, ages 9, 10, and 16, were sitting at a picnic table when they heard a crack and a 30-foot oak tree fell on them.

The 8-year-old girl was killed immediately.

That's just sad.

I do wonder why the tree fell. Was it old age or what?

Boy its been a tough year for the scout ...A few lighting deaths and that one where 4 got eletrcuted... :eek:

I was thinking the same thing, it sure has been a horrible summer for the Boy Scouts :cry:
