Stones target 'hypocrite' patriots in new song

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones, not exactly a band at the forefront of rock 'n' roll activism, are taking aim at the American right with a new song on their upcoming album, according to Newsweek magazine.

The track, "Sweet Neo Con," boasts the line, "You call yourself a Christian, I call you a hypocrite/You call yourself a patriot, well I think you're full of s---," according to the weekly newsmagazine.

"It is direct," singer Mick Jagger was quoted as saying, adding that his collaborator, Keith Richards, was "a bit worried" about a backlash because the guitarist lives in the United States and Jagger does not.

"Sweet Neo Con" is one of 16 tracks featured on the Stones' new album, "A Bigger Bang," which comes out in the United States on Sept. 6, and a day earlier internationally. It was not featured on a 12-track advance CD circulated to critics. The group's publicist was traveling and not able to confirm the quoted lyrics or provide the complete lyrics.

The band is currently rehearsing in Toronto ahead of a world tour that begins on Aug. 21 in Boston.

In their 43-year career, the Stones have observed political developments in songs like 1968's "Street Fighting Man," but have generally avoided taking sides. Notable exceptions included the 1983 single "Undercover (of the Night)," about civil rights abuse in Latin America, and 1991's Gulf War-related track "Highwire."

Exactly the American Right. Not all Americans, and not all americans are right winged (conservs). Right wing is usally associated with the word "Neo-Con". I don't know why...

"Neoconservative" is a word coined by some Republicans during the 1980's. Everyone else calls them "neocons". Reagan and Bush 41 were true neocons, Bush 43 is just your run of the mill economic left-wing liberal and social right-wing conservative in a similar (but not as extreme) vein to the old Soviet government.

That is irrelevant. If he is bashing the President, he is also bashing ME.

I was never a big Stone's fan anyway. If you grew up in the 60's it was the Beatles or the Stones, very rare to like both. Mick can't sing, is painful to even look at, and the one time I've seen them, back in 1981, they were absolutely terrible. JMO - and now that he's joining the American hating activists who for some reason think anybody cares what they have to say in the first place.

It isn't surprising to me to see them sell out. After all, look around you. It's not that difficult to find an American hating military bashing activist, perhaps even 10,000 or so in your city. Sad, but true.

However, it cannot be denied that their reputation is severly tarnished and their fan base has shrunk. So what if they are putting out another album?? I was entertained at the golf course last night by some guitar playing wanna be, with CD's for sale for $5.

The fact is, thei rbase changed, but it didn't shrink. For every mouthbreathing redneck "patriot" that believed the ClearChannel-initiated boycott, some moron left-wing hack took their place. The lesson is, most people really just don't care about politics.

I'm positive that the Dixie-Chicks laugh all the way to the bank every day.
