That is so sad. What do people think of when they do this type of thing? Do they have no conscious? Do they not think of other people and their families? I hope they catch the wife and husband who is responsible.

Police chief was just on Rita Cosby's show on MSNBC and said it was a handgun, not a shotgun as had been previously reported. They are still on the loose tonight.

May be a break in the case... police say they know where the inmate is(not sure about the wife). It's in Hamilton County, TN just north of Chattanooga.

Report: Fugitive Tenn. Couple Tracked To Kentucky
Prisoner's Wife Allegedly Killed Guard To Free Husband

POSTED: 10:09 am EDT August 10, 2005
UPDATED: 6:57 pm EDT August 10, 2005

ERLANGER, Ky. -- A van used by an escaped Tennessee prison inmate and his wife -- accused of helping him escape by shooting and killing a correctional officer -- has been found at a Kentucky hotel, reported Cincinnati television station WLWT.

A SWAT team surrounded an Econo Lodge hotel in Erlanger on Wednesday after investigators found the van there, the station said. According to a U.S. Marshal, the couple had been staying at the hotel, but have not been found, WLWT reported.

Authorities said Wednesday that Jennifer Hyatte shot and killed a correctional officer who was escorting her shackled and handcuffed husband, George, at the courthouse in Kingston, Tenn. A hospital spokeswoman told the Knoxville News Sentinel that the officer, Wayne Morgan, was shot in the stomach and died after he was airlifted to a hospital in Knoxville.

Sheriff David Haggard said the two then made their getaway in a Ford Explorer that was later found abandoned. He said a substantial amount of blood was found inside the SUV.

Investigators said that Jennifer Hyatte may have been wounded when she allegedly fired at the two state corrections officers escorting her husband from the courthouse Tuesday. The partner of the slain officer returned fire.

The head of the Tennessee Highway Patrol's criminal investigation division said Jennifer Hyatte -- a former prison nurse -- might be trying to treat her wound herself.

An attorney who was at the courthouse when the shooting took place said George Hyatte was there to plead guilty in a plea deal involving an armed robbery.

Meanwhile, Michael Hyatte has a message for his brother, George: "Enough is enough." On NBC this morning, Michael Hyatte urged his brother to surrender, saying he'd been assured by police he won't be hurt.

Michael Hyatte offered his condolences to the family of the dead man, Wayne Morgan. He also said his brother told him a couple of months ago that he didn't want to spend the rest of his life in prison.

News conference expected shortly... possible major development. Don't want to speculate, but there's a lot of police activity in Central Ohio according to MSNBC.

Looks like an interesting late evening.
