ET has confirmed that CHRISTOPHER REEVE's wife, DANA, has been diagnosed with lung cancer. The 44-year-old widow of 'Superman' released the following statement: "Based on the imminent release of a tabloid article regarding my personal health, my family and I have decided to release our own statement.I have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, and am currently undergoing treatment. I have an excellent team of physicians, and we are optimistic about my prognosis. My family and I deeply appreciate the care and concern of our friends and supporters, and trust that everyone understands our need and desire for privacy during this time. I hope before too long to be sharing news of my good health and recovery. Now, more than ever, I feel Chris with me as I face this challenge. As always, I look to him as the ultimate example of defying the odds with strength, courage, and hope in the face of life's adversities."

Dana, a non-smoker, recently cancelled a public appearance on July 13, citing "family reasons." Inspired by her husband, she took up stem-cell research and became chairman of the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. Dana lost her mother to ovarian cancer earlier this year.


This poor woman has been thru hell and back.

OMG, what a real shock! Yes she has been to hell and back. That poor family!

I was always very impressed with her, as she helped for her husband, after the accident. I realize they were separated but got back together. And she so lovingly cared for him too.

I'm sure that family is just reeling with the tragic news.

OMGoodness! That is so sad. You wonder why? I think everyone quesitons why.

My Aunt Marlene who passed away on July 23rd of this year...she had a cancer that had spread throughout her body...inspite of chemo and radiation treatments. She was diagnosed on November 16th last year with an already stage 4 cancer in one of her lungs.

One of her 2 daughters Melissa...is getting married on September 17th.

Aunt Marlene's husband...Uncle Larry...said to all of us when we gathered at his house the night before the wake and funeral...that our bodies all have cell groups and that somehow...I'm not sure if it's the environment anymore...auto immune defincencies (sp?), our eating, etc., that start some cells going haywire in the body so to say.

Eric - I too have theories about our environment, air, food habits, etc. to explain the increase in cancer. I remember all of my doctors almost wondering outloud, why I got it at age 43. They were just stumped. I've read plenty and you could go in so many directions:

Lawn Care Chemicals:
I am surrounded by 24 families that blast their lawns with 'fertilizers', or so they say, why then do the ChemLawn guys were tall boots, long rubber gloves and masks while they spray? We fertilize our own lawn ourselves, with straight feed, not weed and feed. Of course we did this way back when, to save money but after my cancer dx, I was really glad we did it. But of course when the lawn companies roll in, the very air is so filled with chemicals, you can't stay outside long, until it disappates.

Beef:
There is now a direct proven link between beef and colon cancer.

Preservatives:
Our foods are filled with them. I wash all our fruit and you're supposed to use dishsoap and a scrub brush!

More but you get the idea. Do I live eachday afraid to eat and breathe - no, I don't. But I do think all these chemicals we are surrounded with are not good for us.

I joke we should just live out in the country. Then I could get away from my goofy, "I can't have one stinking weed or clover" in my yard neighbors......they've even wiped out baby toads. They're hopping over here but the guy next door once asked me, huh we never have them in our yard - I wanted to scream outloud, it's b/c you blast your property with bright yellow chemical sprays! I really hope their kids can reproduce healthy kids someday....

Got off on a tangent there didn't I? My longest post in weeks!!!

I've heard of some cases like that before.

Hopefully she'll recover and it was caught in time. Lung Cancer is the deadliest kind.

I know, Brent. But, you NEVER hear about non smokers getting lung cancer on the news or anywhere else.
