Zephyrs To Hold Hurricane Awareness Night
July 22, 2005 - On Friday, August 5th the New Orleans Zephyrs will have Hurricane Awareness Night at the ballpark to promote hurricane relief efforts.
Representatives from the Red Cross will be at the game and will give away some emergency hurricane kits between innings throughout the game. Representatives from the Louisiana Department of Revenue will be on the concourse talking with fans about tax relief for those affected by hurricane damage. Home Depot will also conduct a Hurricane Awareness Clinic on the plaza from 6:00 PM to 6:45 PM.
WWL-TV meteorologist Carl Arredondo will throw out the first pitch, and will do his weather forecasts live from Zephyr Field. Jefferson Parish Council Chairman Tom Capella will also be throwing out a ceremonial first pitch.
In addition, Aaron Broussard and Walter Maestri will be in attendance, along with Capella, representing Jefferson Parish.
Also involved in the promotion of hurricane relief at the park will be a collection bin at the ticket office for donation of dog treats for shelter animals on behalf of the Louisiana SPCA. Fans donating dog treats will get a $5 ticket to the game - good for any seating location.
The collection was started by Jesuit High School student Nathan Judge, a Life-Level Boy Scout, who has chosen the Louisiana LA/SPCA as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project; he will be collecting dog treats for the shelter animals through the month of September.
Nathan’s interest in the LA/SPCA started when he adopted his dog, Jockamo, from the shelter several years ago. After meeting with LA/SPCA Program Services Manager Lori Haeuser, he learned that the shelter had lost its previous source of donations for dog and cat treats, and decided to assist.
Ms. Haeuser says she is “touched by Nathan’s generosity and the love he has for the animals. We are always in need of supplies, and his donation will be greatly appreciated.”
If you are unable to attend the Zephyrs game but would still like to donate dog treats, please inquire about other collections sites at info@la-spca.org. They can also call the LA/SPCA at call (504) 944-7445 or visit http://www.la-spca.org for more information
