My daughter has a cat that is about 2 years old almost three. We have noticed in the last few days she is extremely overweight for a cat her size and structor. Tonight my wife tells me that she is having problems with her bowels. Also the cat that my daughter named Tigger is also very unhappy andsometimes keeps to herself. But tonight she wants to sleep on our bed. Not sure if this some bigger type of problem or something small. So if anyone out there with pets can tell us what to do it would be a big help. Thankyou Even sometimes she meows like she is in pain of some kind.

Bud you might want to edit this. It sounds to me like your wife is having problems with her bowels instead of the cat. That is what you meant, isn't it. I don't imagine your wife would appreciate your discussing her bowels on a message board.

If the cat has a bowel obstruction, it needs to go to the vet or the problem may prove fatal...

I'd spend the money on the vet because you don't want your daughter to come home and find her cat has died (and Murphy's Law says that is what is likely)... Normally cats live well into their teen years--out last 3 were over 20 years old...

I would definately take the cat to the vet. There must be SOMETHING wrong. I'm not sure about animal psychology with trying to be around humans quite suddenly... Let's just hope she/he is warming up to you!

I think he means the cat and I too am concerned there's an obstruction. Check the litterbox. Take a stool sample in if you can or a visit to the ER. Poor kitty.

Thankyou Mary, she tells me the cat is not going on her own.

Then you need to call the Vet in the morning. When we got our dog, I remember her dog care book said cats and dogs can ingest very harmful household items, yarn, thread, tinsle, Easter basket grass, things you'd assume they'd try chewing and spit out. It's when they swallow them, you may have problems.

I read about a lab that smelled food stains from a pot holder than had fallen on the floor. The dog licked the food off the fabric but then began chewing. And needed surgery b/c it swallowed parts of the pot holder, telfon coating and fabric.

See if you can find evidence she might have gotten into areas of the home that would have harmful items like this. I had cats growing up and mine would take naps inside linen closets, dresser drawers, tight places. You might find something half chewed or wet from licking. It would help the Vet to know these things, if this is the case.

What goes in has to come out. And my dog goes 4 times a day. I pick it up everyday so I'd know if we have a problem.

A bowel-obstruction won't make a cat fat; it'll make it sick and eventually not want to eat anything.

Fat makes a cat fat.

I know what happens with humans if they get an obstruction. They can't evacuate their bowels and start vomiting up what looks like coffee grounds but isn't if you get my drift. I would take it to a vet pronto.

Who said the cat was fat?

He said the cat is overweight. It might not even look "fat" but it may feel heavy (overweight), especially if it just became noticeable over the past few days.

Cats also tend to be very independent creatures. The fact that the cat is seeking out comfort with you two by wanting to stay in your bed could be a sign that the cat knows something is wrong and needs help. And the way they meow -- definitely a sign.

I think you have to take the cat to the vet as soon as possible. Please don't wait, it can make it even worse. Good luck and hope the kitty will be fine again.
