{Terror} Authorities Arrest Men With NYC Maps, Video

Five Men Detained in New Jersey, Set to Be Deported

July 26, 2005 — Five Egyptian men with maps of the New York City subway system and video of New York landmarks have been arrested by the Joint Terrorism Task Force in Newark, N.J., ABC News has learned.

FBI and law enforcement officials told ABC News the five men — four illegal immigrants and one law enforcement fugitive — were arrested Sunday night following a tip to the Newark Police Department. In addition to the subway maps and video, the men had train schedules and $8,000 in $20 and $50 bills.
The men were identified as: Karim Ahmed Abdel Latif Ahmed, 21; his brother Mahoud Ahmed Abdel Latif Ahmed, 19; Ahmed Mohamed Atta, 30; Mohamed Ibrahim Gaber, 34, and Mohamed Palat Anwar Jozain. When Newark authorities converged at the group's location at 246 Ferry St., Karim Ahmed answered the door and agreed to allow police to enter. Officers said they noticed the maps, and video cameras and Karim and his brother agreed to a search.

Karim said he had the maps because he had a new job as a street vendor. Initially, Karim said no one else was in the apartment, but police came upon the three other men upon further search.

FBI officials said the men have no known link to a terror network but noted that none of them could adequately explain the items they had in their possession, the large amount of money or their reasons for being in the United States. Mohamed Ibrahim Gaber has been a fugitive since he jumped ship from an Egyptian flagged freighter in September 2000.
The men, all of whom claimed to be unemployed civil or chemical engineers, are set to be deported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Well it is not him but someone that shares his common name. Wonder what they are up to? Oh well we could not figure it out so lets just deport them.

No, it's NOT "him"...but we know Al-Qaida uses family members (less chance of "ratting out"), and this guy could easily be a relative. :larrow:

...and, all we can do is deport them?

I wish we could do more than just deport them. Flogging would be a start. I hope that at least the authorities kept the money. They could use it for equipment or something.

Yikes.

I think a London-style attack is imminent somewhere in the U.S. New York, Chicago, Atlanta etc.

L.A., Chicago, and Boston are high on the list for the very near future. London in the next few weeks looks very high. There are a few things I am looking into and don't have all the answers right now.

After the failed attacks last Thursday in London, I would say another 7/7-style attack is virtually assured, and if it doesn't happen, then it will in the U.S. I've been thinking the U.S. would be hit for awhile, but what sealed it for me was London getting hit(Western country). Before that it had been Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq, etc.

Just a thought here...... kinda random..... Attacks in london were 7/7, 7 in the bible represents perfection..... the next number which comes to mind is 8... I did some searching on the number 8 when my father died; its meaning in the bible is 'a new beginning' (8 was appearing too many times during his illness and death so I had to find out what it meant). Sooooooo I have to wonder if the next attack will have a link to the number 8, but I could be totally way out in left field here.

Not very good news at all here. It is only a matter of time I am afraid.

Fortunately it is not yet illegal to be a Muslim or to possess maps of a city or videos of landmarks. If it gets to the point that those ARE illegal, it's time for me to leave. :)

What??

No one said anything about their religion being illegal or a reason to deport them. What is ILLEGAL was their immigration status.

Yup, Al-Qaeda definitely seems to value symbolism in regards to the timing of their attacks. After all, Henry Hudson "discovered" Manhattan on September 11, 1609 (not the first time it was discovered, but the first time by a European).

Tourists...or terrorists?

Tourists wouldn't claim to be working as a "street vendor."

Oh I agree. Their immigration status was illegal, and the proper course of action for that is deportation, which is what they got. However, it was implied above that they should have received a punishment more severe than deportation, which further implies that they have done something illegal beyond their illegal immigration. We know precisely four facts about these guys: they immigrated illegally, they're muslims, they had maps, and they had videos of monuments. The government took the proper action for number 1. So by what basis should more punishment have been done?
