LAwxrgal's High School Reunion

#1 Postby LAwxrgal » Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:53 pm

Ten years already? Dang I feel old!

Ten years since, with an enormous sigh of relief, I walked across the stage, wearing my cap and gown, and received my diploma?

When the reunion was announced this past February, I went back and forth on this issue. Should I go or should I not? Should I reconnect with those people from my past, or should I let bygones be bygones? After all, I only kept vaguely in touch with about three people. Why should I torture myself?

They say that in order to go forward, one must go back. So this past Saturday night, after a lot of torture, I went to my tenth high school reunion.

The head cheerleader, the girl whose figure everyone envied, got fat. The girl who was pregnant when we left high school is pregnant again. The girl whose hair color changed with her mood is now a shrink. The quarterback of the football team is now a minister. The valedictorian is a professional student.

The DJ put on some line-dancing music and most of the class broke out into a lively line dance. For that one moment, all the previous lines of demarcation -- race, clique, walk of life -- were gone. But once the dance was over, everyone went back to the way they were. The popular people were the popular people. The outcasts took their table. Everyone else stood in little groups with either their former friends or their significant others.

Yes, ten years has passed. Ten years is a lot of time. A lot has changed. And a lot has stayed the same.

Ten years, indeed. I wonder what the next ten will hold.

Ten year reunions are great fun! I was most impressed with the quiet ones in my class who really blossomed after high school and had made very successful lives for themselves. And I laughed at the cliques that were still in force all that time later.

Probably my two favorite reunion memories are first, the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who blew in on a motorcycle, wearing red stilettos and too-tight black jeans. She didn't care at all what people were thinking and came in like she owned the place. She was awesome.

My second is one of the handsome, popular guys--who hadn't spoken to me much in school--he had become quite the buff triathelete and danced with me half the night. Yeah, baby!

Glad you went and had such a good time :) It's interesting, isn't it, how life seems to lead some people down a path and others choose the path they live. Just who has followed and who has led can really be evident after a ten year absence.

 Too funny! Some people don't change!

I forgot to mention the immortal words of the captain of the football team (and quarterback who I had a HUGE crush on)... "You look good." I was like WOA. And we spent most of the night together, much to the chagrin of the little ditzy cheerleaders who are STILL ditzy and STILL after him after all these years. The more things change the more they stay the same.

There was this one girl, didn't talk at all in high school, turns out she's a published author. I couldn't believe it.

Hey, I love your assessment of the ten year! A lot has changed, and a lot has stayed the same. Too soon for you to be thinking you're in the wrong place because there are so many "old" people there.

I guess you must be about my son's age...28. He would be going back to his 10th too right now.

Given the chance, go again in a few years. The cliques tend to break down over time. People actually speak to you who never would before.

And there is always that one gorgeous hunk of a guy and one tiny mom of three who just seems to be hanging back in high school forever...not aging at all!

Thanks for sharing. Post here again after your 20th.

I'll be going to my reunions... My best friend and I have decided to keep something secret between us that we'll confess at our 10 year reunion. [Don't worry, it's nothing huge. But I couldn't say it here either!]

Anyway, i'll definately be going to my 10 year... You know... 11 years from now... Yes, I know, time will pass quickly. That's ok though. Love life like you mean it.
