{Border} Report: shots were fired at a minuteman patrol

CA Minutemen Update, July 24th
Campo, CA

There was a good turnout of reinforcements at the Campo CA Minutemen border watch this weekend. The usual suspects showed up to protest our peaceful gathering. All the usual hate was spewed at the 60 -80 minutemen to no avail. There were a few media members from Spanish language stations, so the angry mob pretended to be more civil with their leader reading a solemn prayer and a recitation of the 3500 illegal aliens who have died trying to cross our border illegally. After a few moments, he blamed that and every other death in the Western hemisphere on the minutemen. They targeted Jim Chase, getting right up in his face, screaming and taunting him after they breeched our line. Finally the sheriffs took charge & tried to marshall the protesters back into the border road, but to no avail. Jim Gilchrist arrived, and the mob came to life threatening to kill him, calling him names, but Jim never responded. That first episode ended a few minutes later with a spontaneous outbreak of "God Bless America" while American flags were waived. One protester, a grandmother, came over and shook my hand and said she wanted to be "Amigos". I could tell that she was sincere and shook her hand in a gesture of good will.

After that we split into several groups, and went out on patrol. The terrain was rugged, but beautiful on the moonlit night. Little did we know what lie ahead for one group of minutemen already on patrol in Jacumba.

Other than making new friends, and exploring the territory around our post, nothing happened. At about 1 pm, we heard the angry mob return to the base camp & this time they were much louder, since the media crews were long gone. One particularly sick individual kept using profanity and making perverse suggestions to several of the men in our group right in front of his little girl. An alert minuteman, Larry Morgan, showed this to the sheriffs deputy who promptly arrested this man, and after a search of his vehicle, an open container of alchohol was found. The decision was made to strike base camp and find a more suitable location in the morning on private property to avoid the constant harrassment of the angry mob.

Upon returning to the VFW at about 3 AM, we heard a chilling report from Jim Herring, a young man from Mission Viejo, who was on patrol with his girlfriend Darlene, and about 13 other minutemen at Jacumba. According to Jim, they were intercepting messages about a drug deal going down right then. Just after they discovered an individual on the border road, they lit him up with a spotlight, shots rang out. Jim and the minutemen around him took cover from what sounded like an AK47 rapid firing, but could not be sure. The rounds hit the steel runway corduroy that makes up the border fence in this region near Herring's position. This story is developing, so this preliminary report may be changed, but shots were fired at a minuteman patrol, which to my knowledge has never happened before.

The Border War continues-only a matter of time before REAL Vigilantes and well armed ones at that begin their activity.
