I have no idea whether it is suitable for kids. I did find it interesting that the chocolate river was actually 1+ million gallons of chocolate syrup.
Careful there, Swimdude. I am far from a teenager and see all his movies. I find him an extremely fine actor.

Maybe i'm just in the age where all of the teenage girls are only going BECAUSE he's in it.

the original movie does not follow the book as closely as this one does. this one is much truer to the book. Willy Wonka was not the nicest guy in the world....

Apologies. I agree; he IS an excellent actor! I couldn't stop laughing in "Benny and Joon", which I saw for the first time only 2 weeks ago. Nevertheless, the giggling teenagers creates an annoying effect, especially when watching one of his filmes in the theater.

at 40 something years old, the giggling you hear may not be teenagers. he certainly makes me swoon and i'm 45..... (and holding).
i remember when the first movie came out in 1971. I was almost 12 and i had to take my little sister (who was then 9 and little brother who was 3) with me.
I had The Candyman song stuck in my head for years. and those Oompah Loompahs gave me nightmares.
ACK!!! One more for the Songs You Love to Hate thread!!

I read your response about 2 hours ago and I will have you know while cooking dinner and then cleaning the kitchen after dinner and even while writing this note. I am humming that #$@# song in my head.

LOL @ Alicia...
Im also undecided about taking my 5 year old. He saw Lemony Snicket (which was also kind of on the creepy side). I dunno yet.
I read Charley and the chocolate factory and Charley and the glass elevator when I was only 7 and I still remember the stories very vividly. I was dissapointed with Gene Wilder as Wonka, because in the book Wonka is a rather shady guy.

A lot of movies even like Shrek for example have a lot of insinuations that go right over a kids head. Visuals, I think have a lot more impact on a child. A lot of it does depend on the individual child. My son (6) for example will say to me "mom I dont want to watch this" and it is normally something like crocodile hunter (real life situations) He knows what fantasy is and can seperate the two. That being said, I do sensor what ever he watches, wether on TV or Movies...
