A Virginia State Trooper was shot about 500 feet from where I was sitting a few hours ago. Heard the shots. I do not know the troopers condition or if they have a suspect in custody. This incident stemmed from a traffic stop by the trooper. More details later..really cant say much more now.

My first visitor to my new residence was a State Police detective. he said the trooper will recover and
the suspect is in custody. He will be charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer along with several other charges. I was interviewed and told I will probably be needed to testify in court.

A Virginia State trooper and a Hampton man are recovering from gunshot wounds this morning following an overnight chase and exchange of gunfire.

The trooper, R.S. Bowers Jr. of Chesapeake, was working in Hampton around 12:45 a.m. when he tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic infraction near Hampton Roads Center Parkway and Big Bethel Road.

Police say the motorist, a 28-year-old Hampton man, didn't pull over, so Bowers pursued him north on Big Bethel Road. The driver lost control of his car, left the roadway, hit a residence and fled on foot.

The trooper chased the man on foot into the first block of Ponderosa Drive, where they exchanged gunfire. It's not known what prompted the shots.

Bowers was wounded in his leg and upper torso, where a bullet penetrated above his ballistic vest.

The suspect was wounded in his upper torso.

Both men are in stable condition at Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Bowers has worked for the State Police for 2 1/2 years and is assigned to Hampton/Newport News.
