Ship Island, Off the Coast of MS

#1 Postby Radar » Tue Jun 28, 2005 6:04 pm

Is anyone familiar with Ship Island off the Coast of MS? I'm thinking about taking my kids out there this weekend. How is the water? Although we dont get sharks in the sound and the back bay of the Gulf along the MS Gulf Coast I have heard that out past the barriar Island of MS they do have sharks.. Is this something I will have to be concerned about. I have one child, if there is trouble around it will find her. What is there to do out there? Any information would be helpful

I've been to Ship Island once. I take it that you will be catching the ferry near Marine Life. The boat ride takes about an hour if I recall. Nice ride, with refreshments available for purchase. The gulls follow he boat looking for handouts. The boat ties up to a pier near the fort. Fort Mass is in good shape and I suggest you tour it. Bring your camera as there is a large cannon on the upper deck. The walk to the gulf side is along a raised boardwalk. It is a rather long walk to the gulf side beaches. The water is OK but no where near as pretty as Pensacola. My youngest son spotted a gator on the island in a marshy area just off the beach. So, you have to watch out for sharks in the water and gators on the island.....MGC

We take our boat out there. Never had any problems and I have even seen the gator, but do not feed him. There is usually alot of people out there so, have fun!

It's a long ride and not a lot of shade. Take plenty of sun screen with ya and an umbrella if you have room to pack in and carry it with ya for shade. And MGC is right...it is a long walk from the ferry to the beach! But the fort is really neat and its a nice trip.

Don't venture far. Because if you go away from the umbrellas and tourists, the other end is a nude beach. I have been to Ship Island several times.
