Another Shark Attack

The latest attack came this morning just after 10:30 at Cape San Blas near Port St. Joe in Gulf County.

The extent of injuries to the victim isn't know, but NewsChannel Seven learned an air ambulance life-flight helicopter was being called to the scene.

The Gulf County Sheriff's office has closed the Gulf beaches from Cape San Blas westward to the end of the peninsula.

Just this past Saturday a vacationing 14 year old girl from Louisiana was attacked by a shark and killed in the GTulf near Sandestin in Walton County.

I go to the cape frequently in late summer to go scalloping. I can tell you that the bay area over there is a shark mecca. Not saying they attack often but they are there and in large numbers. Very interesting.....hope the victim is ok!

CNN says it was a teenage boy... took a half hour for an ambulance to get there and then he was life-flighted to Panama City.

I had just heard of this attack on fox news. I wouldn't be going in the water right now...

16-year-old boy... been airlifted to a Panama City hospital. He was fishing in chest deep water. Condition is critical.

I never let my kids go in any further than past their knees - just enough to get wet. I've been really afraid of the sharks ever since Jesse Arbogast was attacked a few years back.

Boy Bitten by Shark Off Fla. Panhandle

PENSACOLA, Fla. — A shark attacked and critically injured a teenage boy off Florida's Panhandle on Monday, two days after 14-year-old Louisiana girl died after a shark bit her leg.

The boy, whose age and name wasn't immediately released, was bitten off Cape San Blas (search) and was taken to Bay Medical Center in Panama City on Monday morning, hospital spokeswoman Christa Hild said. The boy was listed in critical condition with severe injuries, but the nature of the injuries were not yet being released, Hild said.

Cape San Blas is a narrow spit of land protruding into the Gulf of Mexico from Gulf County, about 80 miles southwest of Tallahassee.

The cape is a popular vacation destination east of the area where 14-year-old Jamie Marie Daigle (search) was fatally injured by a shark on Saturday.

Daigle, of Gonzales, La., had been had been swimming with a friend about 100 yards from shore in neighboring Walton County when a shark bit her in the leg. Paramedics and an air ambulance crew were unable to revive her.

Gulf County sheriff's officials didn't immediately return calls seeking comment on Monday's attack.

A lot of people here fish in the water also, wading into the surf with a rod, reel, net, and vest. Most of them do it in the early mornings since swimmers and surfers (*rolling eyes because we really have no waves*) are usually in the water for a large part of the daytime hours.

Yep, same here and in Florida with them fishing in the water. It is not uncommon to see them either. When I go to the beach and there is someone fishing in the water, I move.

Also, we will hear more on shark attacks before the summer is over with. The Bull Shark is known to come close to the shoreline during the summer months for food and to mate.

Wade fishers usally have their catch attached to them via stringer. There has been cases where a sharks have taken their catch off the stringer, usally it is a tug of war that the shark usally wins.

You think you are safe in the river from these sharks? Nope! They can also go into fresh water.

Here is a Bull in about a foot of water.

In florida there is no safe body of water unless it is your pool and you looked in before you jumped in.

I think your perfectly safe if you stay close to shore. When we went to FWB last year(and the year before), I never got deeper than waist high and I was constantly looking down(not really for sharks, but for jellyfish and stingrays).

Personally,If you are going to the beach I would not worry about it.Lifegaurds here at Pensacola have even said themselves that it's pretty rare,and the large crowds they have during the day keep the sharks well away from the shoreline.BUT they also said if you are going to a less crowded beach with no lifegaurd your chances of seeing one are a little higher,also if you swim way out there like where that girl was on Saturday you're chances are also higher.Bull sharks usually come to shore at night looking for food,so if you go to a major beach like Pensacola or Destin or where there's a lifegaurd and a decent crowd,you're not gonna see one.And usually with big beaches like that they can spot a shark well offshore and clear the beach before anything happens.
