Reputed gang member held in machete attack
By Michele McPhee
A reputed member of the MS-13 street gang was busted yesterday for attacking an East Boston motorist with a machete, police sources said.
The arrest of Maurizo ``Spooky'' Lopes, 19, is the second arrest of a machete-wielding member of the notorious gang this week. Monday, another MS-13 member was busted for carrying a machete and allegedly threatened to kill his arresting officer, snarling the violent promise in Spanish followed by an MS-13 code ``La Trucha.''
Lopes is suspected in the June 16 attack on an East Boston man who was slashed across the arm on a corner near Maverick Square, the sources said.
``He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time,'' one investigator said of the victim. ``He's lucky he was able to drive away, or he could have lost his arm.''
MS-13 members in El Salvador have been eyed for links to terrorists, and the gang is currently the FBI's primary gang target.
