"Frankly, my dear..."

#1 Postby GalvestonDuck » Tue Jun 21, 2005 9:16 am

Anybody wanna take a stab at what they think will be at the top of the list of AFI's top 100 movie quotes (The special airs tonight)?

I'm guessing "Frankly, my dear...I don't give a damn!" will be among the top ten. Also, in no particular order:

"Houston, we have a problem."

"I'm as mad as hell...and I'm not going to take this anymore!"

"Go ahead, make my day."

"Be afraid. Be very afraid."

"It's alive! It's alive!"

"I'll be back."

"May the force be with you."

"I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse."

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning."

"You talkin' to me?"

"Snap out of it!"

"They're he-e-e-e-e-e-ere!"

"You don't understand! I could’ve had class. I could’ve been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am."

"Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By." (although everyone always misquotes it as "Play it again, Sam.") as well as "Here's lookin' at you, kid."

"There's no place like home," "Lions and tigers and bears...oh my!" and "I'll get you my pretty...and your little dog, too!"

"Yippee ki-yi-yay, -----------" from "Die Hard" might be in the list of 100, as well as "Nobody puts baby in the corner," "Wax on, wax off," "You're gonna need a bigger boat," "Teacher says, 'Everytime a bell rings, an angel gets his wings,'" "Soylent green is people!" "I am serious...and don't call me Shirley," "Tell 'em to go out there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper," and "There's no crying in baseball!"

"Show me the money" will be higher than "You had me at hello" but obviously neither will be in the top ten.

And, of course, the so-called cheesiest movie line of them all ought to be somewhere in the top 20, IMO -- "Love means never having to say you're sorry."

I'll throw in:

"Why don't you come up sometime and see me."

"Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!"

The whole Kevin Costner speech from Bull Durham, which can't be printed here...but it has to do with believing in the hanging curve ball, high fiber, and good scotch.

"Aww, thanks, Ouiser, nothin' like a good piece of a**."

"I'm not crazy, M'Lynn, I've just been in a very bad MOOD for 40 years."

(yeah, I'm partial to Steel Magnolias. Sue me. It has the best one-liners out there)

Saw her yesterday on a Happy Days episode. Think she died of some kind of illness complication.

Yup, I remember she played Linda Purl's character's daughter. LP played a girlfriend of Fonzie for an episode or two...or twenty?

He smashes his way into the bathroom door, with each stroke of the blade jutting through the wood, as his screaming wife watches his progress with her butcher knife poised to strike. He peers through with an evil grin:

From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid....

Who ARE those guys? or

(...and from the vantage point high above the river...)
Butch Cassidy: Then you jump first.
Sundance Kid: No, I said.
Butch Cassidy: What's the matter with you?
Sundance Kid: I can't swim.
Butch Cassidy: Why you crazy, the fall will probably kill you.

From Cool Hand Luke....

Is there a list of them somewhere? I saw parts of the show, but missed at least the last 1/2 hour. I'd love to see the top 10 anyway.

Thanks duckie! :)

I'm also surprised how far down some of them are and the ones you listed that didn't make it at all. Oh well...we could always rank them ourselves! :)

My daily papered listed all of these 100 quotes. Gone With The Wind had another and I swear they typed it wrong! Duckie, check this out, okay? Article said - As God is my witness I will never be hungry again. I think it went - As God ~AS~ my witness I go will never ~GO~ hungry again.

Thanks!

Mary

PS - edit - guess I do remember this quote incorrectly! Found the entire dialogue from that scene (which by the way was scary to watch for the first time as a young child!): "As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again."

Yeah, I believe it is "is" and "be" although I don't have it on video. IMDB has the quote that way. Wasn't able to find the script online...yet.

I remember my 8th grade history teacher, Mrs. Brant. She LOVED GWTW and that was her favorite quote. I remember her letting us watch GWTW while we were studying the Civil War. And Stonewall Jackson was her favorite general (I can hear her little Southern drawl in my mind now as she would say "my faaay-vor-rit general." She was one of those great teachers who you just can't forget! Loved to teach history and we loved to learn from her. She'd just get up there in front of the class and tell a story for an hour...all about whatever it was we were learning at the time. Very dramatic and interesting...kept us tuned in for the whole class.

They don't make 'em like that often.

(Sorry...minor hijack. Oh wait...it's my thread...I'll hijack it if I want to! )

For years I've said that quote as.....As God as my witness!!

GWTW used to be my favorite movie. Somewhere along the line I wasn't so sure I was proud to call it my fave. Don't get me wrong, it was a major motion picture and superbly made. It's just I look at certain aspects of our country's history differently now - slavery, taming the wild west, what we did to Native Americans, so much of it makes me very sad. Guess I don't really have a #1 movie, like I do for TV shows!
