5.3 earthquake in Los Angeles

#1 Postby Brent » Thu Jun 16, 2005 4:01 pm

No other details right now... probably not going to be much news. 5.3 isn't too bad.

That's THREE sizable earthquakes in California in 5 days...

This one seemed bigger than the one on Sunday, it shook a heck of a lot more than the one Sunday morning. Only lasted 10 seconds max or so I would say. Had some windows rattle but that's about it here.

This one was a much sharper jolt, but not as long...no damage here in Santa Monica, but I definitely don't need my afternoon coffee after that!!!

On the usgs it's a 5.3 but some news media outlits are reporting 5.8 ... there is quite a difference in those 2 numbers

I always go with the official usgs untill shown otherwise by the official sites

Edit: they are experiencing several aftershocks already 7 quakes in 10 minutes including initial one.. no fun!

My first thought when I read the email -- "Whole lotta shakin' going on." Heck, we might not have to worry about a "Big One" in regards to tropical weather this year. The natural disaster of '05 might just be a quake. Hope not though....

5.2 or 5.3 is what the national networks are saying.

The epicenter of this one is near Beaumont, which is fairly close to Palm Springs.

Its fairly far from L.A., so that's why there will probably be minimal damage. The trend that's distrubing for me is that this quake's depth was only 8 miles as well.

That's three for CA as well as one for Alaska and one for Chile -- all since Sunday.

What's up???

Glad you're okay, Furry. :)

I can't help but think that a larger earthquake is on the way... Southern California's been lucky since Northridge 11 1/2 years ago(anyone go through that one or the Loma Prieta one in 1989?)

I always wondered how people sleep at night in CA. Can't imagine always wondering when " the big one" will come.

Give me a blizzard any day.

No use worrying over it... can't do anything about it. Kinda like soldiers in Iraq, they could be killed in an attack at anytime but they can't lose sleep over it.

Wouldn't worry about myself, I would worry about my kids. Every night when I sent them up to bed, or every day when I put them on the bus to school. Worrying is what moms do.
