What was Your Favorite/Worst Subject in School? (EDITED)

#1 Postby Guest » Wed Jun 15, 2005 9:34 pm

Favorite: Math, Science (minus the life science labs just before lunch) :18:

Least favorite: HISTORY!! (and still is)

EDIT: the "OTHER" option could also mean you liked them all or disliked them all. If that is the case, consider responding to the "Other" choice.

Loved Lit.. always been a reader.. math was a close second..

Hated physics though (and like weather go figure LOL) and Spanish.

Edit: I know proper grammer.. just tend to type how I speak when informal LOL (which means grammer is thrown out the window)

Very bad! LOL actually (and Spanish spelling way off here) we live in a predominately Hispanic neighborhood... and when ever I say Hablo en espanol muy pocitto (I speak spanish very very little)... they all look at me and say I say it with a good imitation of knowing how to speak Spanish. I say that's cause it's the only thing I know how to say and after saying it so many times I better know how to say it right LOL

I waited tables for quite a few years and it the bus boys always laughed at me cause I would say muy freo agua (very cold water) instead of yallo for ice :) took me 3 years to learn the right word.

I loved earth science and most other science and biology courses. I enjoyed English and Literature. Math was my downfall. The year I took Geometry my report card was five A's and an F and five A's and a D. I almost had a nervous breakdown. The teacher almost had a nervous breakdown too trying to help me.

Loved Literature and still do - maybe that is why I ended up working in Elementary and College libraries.

Daughters, their friends and most of the students I know were appalled when I told them about one half of my final test in Senior Literature. We had to write a 5000 word thesis with contents, bibliography and footnotes. Old fashioned footnotes, mind you, added at the bottom of a page. Style, margins, etc. all according to the instructor's requirements.
We could choose any subject in English Lit but it had to be approved by the teacher. He would grade the papers as often as we liked before the final and only "turn in" date. No late papers accepted. Each paper was given two grades - the first for content and writing - the second for grammar. Every grammatical error dropped your grade by one letter grade. Four errors got you an "F."

The second half of the final exam was an hundred question True/False test with right minus wrong. That meant, if you were't pretty sure of the answer, it was probably best to leave it blank.

This man was one of the two best teachers I every had - high school or college.

Eck :( *comforts* Geometry is one of those subject you either can get or not get. I think if you can see it in your head it makes it easier.. Going through that with the 12 year old kiddo (well was... today was her last full day of school) Did your teacher try to have you hold and draw the lines on different shapes cut out of paper with the more basic stuff? Trying that with her... if that doesn't help gonna probably come back for advice from everyone here. Gotta get her strong as she starts honors high school level math next year. *groans*

We took some strange IQ test in sixth grade and I did extremely well, but my teacher told me that abstracts would be difficult for me. I did transfer to Geometry B where they simplified things by making us cut out shapes and stuff as you said. I made B's but I still didn't get the math? The teacher gave up her lunch hour to tutor me and it just didn't help me. Perhaps your daughter would be helped by some private tutoring this summer.

Yeah, just got back her SAT scores from the talent search. She got a 480 in vocab and 460 on the math. 39/32 percentile compared to COLLEGE bound students. Sorry.. just had to brag for a sec. Remember she is only a 6th grader. I'm so proud of her as she's having a really tough time right now with real life.

The problem with the math isn't that she's really behind for her age but her school which does 2 years in advance math work. She skipped over 2 years of math work when entering the school in 4th grade. And they already sent letters to us parents that 7th grade is going to be extremely hard year. The high schools will be looking at those grades. And she'd just be painfully bored in a regular high school so needs every chance she can get to get in one that offers more advance course then most high schools do.

I have never been a pushy mom when it comes to school work. Just ask her to try her best. But have seen she is starting to get frustrated a little by the math and would like to give her a boost now rather then later before she feels so over her head she gives up. I'm holding off on the tutoring for now... I don't want her to feel 'pushed' as she gets enough of that at school. But it is an option in the future if home help doesn't smooth things over.

It erks me... they pressure these kids in grade school now... we didn't deal with this untill highschool I don't think. I remember picking highschools was a big deal.. but having to be accepted in them? Maybe I just don't remember.

Seventh grade was the most difficult year for me. She will need all the understanding and support she can get. As far as the tutoring, I would just ask her how she feels about it and let her know she has that option available to her if she chooses.

Yo hablo Español...

I liked Spanish when I took it in school since it came so naturally to me. I also liked computer and technology-related classes. I despised PE and history, however.
