Do you use capitalization and punctuation in IMs?

I always (well, almost always) use proper capitalization and punctuation in IMs [and e-mails]. How about you?
I am glad to see that a very many of us on this site capitalize the first word in sentences and use periods, commas, etc. where necessary. It only take split seconds to use the shift key.

A lot of the people I correspond with on AIM do not use capitalization an punctuation. I thought it would be interesting to see what everyone here does and/or thinks about this.
Thanks Mike, Eric, bfez and Mike for the responses thus far.

Ms. Correct Punctuation, here, unless you read my posts over

is allowed!

Well I must say I am pathetic with English grammer in general and am kind of a cheat. I just type, especially when I am on IM, I can type much faster than I can think!!!! :o

In posting, I usually have plenty of time to correct minor typing glitches...not so in IM, but I do employ caps and lower case at all times.
(Please note that I have never learned to touch-type...I use a "pharmacist's" four-finger, two-hand style.)

Yes I do. I learned to type the old fashioned way - taught by a very strict nun at my Catholic all girls' HS. Manual typewriters, carbon paper, etc. What fun - it was torture! But somehow I learned to type using home row, not the hunt and peck method my husband uses. And so punctuation and capitalization just go hand in hand in anything I type. In chat rooms I used to use shortcuts but now I'm back to complete words too. Contrast that to my 15 year old's emails to friends - yikes!!! Very few words, just abbreviations. And forget the rest. Cute though....I smile at her emails.

I use home row, too. Using home row apparently does get one more used to using shift.

Most of the time I do. It depends on how lazy I am at the time.

Tom - so glad to see someone else uses home row. My kids have asked what those raised dots are for on the j and f keys......LOL If you type that way you know immediately when you're off home row. You're typing nonsense!

I try to use the proper way on message boards, chatrooms and Instant Messages.
Wow that brings up memories on learning to type - I too learned on the old manual typewriter with carbon paper and the HOME ROW. My hubby and daughter are at awe when I can type without looking at my fingers. I can't be in the computer room when my hubby is pecking away at the keyboard - drives me bonkers.

LOL Ticka. I also am a Home Row typer! I will often say to my hubby, can I help you type that letter, because it is just so painful to watch him try find a letter on the keyboard!
I learned to type on a typewriter, the old fashioned ones that go DING when you end the row. That sound used to drive me batty. I learned to type at school. They used to put a black cloth over the keys so you did not look down. Did you also have to do the silly exercises and type a load of drivell? I am very greatful now that I learned to touch type, I dont know what I would do without that skill.
