Sad News From My College

At my college they require 4 classes of a foreign language as a requirement to graduate in most degrees. I am taking French 201 right now... I took 4 yrs. of French while in high school. Anyways... our French Club wanted to visit the art museum in Kansas City over the summer, not only to see French artwork, but to allow some of the students to get a little culture. In order to do that we planned a car wash (Which was originally scheduled for tmrw). However, once some people on campus found out the car wash was for the "French" club they threatened to vandalize our equipment and protest by the car wash.
It is not like we support the French. Anyways... our car wash was cancelled and as a result we may not get to go to Kansas City this summer unless we can find a way to fundraise other than car wash.
Sad...sad...sad.

I know how dissapointed you must be, but saying the word France or French right now in this country is not a good thing. A lot of hostile feeling towards them right now. After all they shunned America. But I do understand it was your French club which is not directly related to France in any way. Hope things work out for you.

I think that is a shame. I understand why you are upset and hopefully you will find a way to raise the money. I have an idea let a local radio station hear of your situation and maybe they will help.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

That is ashame WX! People shouldn't be taking their frustrations out on innocent bystanders like yourself and the children in Canada.

How awful! I know the feeling! I took five and a half years of French, which used to be a good thing when I mention it to people, now I say it and they give me dirty looks! I thought it was an accomplishment to learn something new, but the situation with the French has now made it a bad thing!
Garrett, I also think Rainband's idea is brilliant! Call up any and every radio and news station that will listen and your trip will be funded in no time! Yes, these are turbulent times, but American people still have hearts!

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I will e-mail the club President this evening and see what we can do.

Garrett, you guys can always fundraise and just say that
it's for your "foreign language class". Most people are in such
a hurry, these days, they won't take the time to ask "
which language?"! Just another idea...

Thanks Breeze. It is just the fact that it was some people from the college who found out. We weren't going to broadcast that we were the French club. I sent an e-mail to Stephanie (the Prez) and so I am waiting to see what she says.

Gosh. People are going way overboard with this "i hate you b/c you don't support every single thing we want" bull. Another reason why i think freedom of speech is not really valued here for the right reasons. Maybe you can try another fund raiser though? we made crepes and such at a school function way back in middle school and they sold like hotcakes!

Well I got an e-mail from Stephanie who said that she had called the Security office at the college and filed a formal complaint. Also, she received permission this afternoon from Target for a "Freedom Wash" at their store. They have promised us a security guard for the 3 hr. event next Saturday as well.

That's good to hear! Show them that you're American and proud of it!

Hey Garret, don't let it get to you! Today I wore a T-shirt I got from volunteering at the Houston International Festival last year and on the back it says "The French Connection" (The theme was France). And I am waiting for the day that I get jumped for wearing it.
I'm wearing it right now actually. (Don't flame me, please!!!)
