That's sad! I can't believe they didn't have the family identify the boy BEFORE the funeral.

We had something similar happen at the ER once. This guy came in with most of his scalp taken off the top of his head where he was into the rearview mirror and then through the windshield of the truck he was driving. His face was badly damaged and he was in cardiac arrest. We sent him to OR almost immediately after stabilizing him.

The surprise came when we called his family to tenderly ask them to come to the hospital. The nurse asked, "Is this the family of 'John Smith?' (named changed for obvious reasons)" The person on the other end acknowledged that it was and then asked the nurse if she wanted to talk to him. Then she said, "Is there a John Smith, Sr. and John Smith, Jr?" "No, just John. Hold on, I'll get him." So, John got on the phone and the nurse clarified the address...then the truck. That's when it all came together. His truck, with his wallet, had been stolen. So the ID on the body was NOT the ID of the person on the stretcher.

Weird stuff happens sometimes. My mom always told me to be sure I have ID with me in case sometimes happens. And I totally understand why. :)

A mixed blessing for that family, I guess, although I hate to imagine the condition of their (half?) living son if they could not properly identify him.

Certainly not good for the other family, though.

What a tragic and amazing story....So much more uneeded heartache for both sides, I don't know what to say....
