BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- A U.S. government plane searching for three Americans held by rebels crashed in the mountainous jungles of southern Colombia, killing the three-person American crew, officials said Wednesday.
The single-engine Cessna 208 went down Tuesday night near Larandia military base in Caqueta state. The Americans were abducted when their plane crashed in the same area last month.
A Colombian military official said on condition of anonymity that the plane caught fire after the crash and Colombian troops found the crew's remains in the wreckage.
Investigators from the Colombian Attorney General's office arrived at the site Wednesday to retrieve the bodies of the three men, a member of the office told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
U.S. Embassy spokesman Gerald McLoughlin would not comment on the fate of the crew. He said that it was not immediately clear what caused the plane to go down about an hour after sunset
