Something to think about...

When I was in Salt Lake City at the National Forensic League Speech and Debate tournament I heard a speech on white males being discriminated against. The speech was not very good IMHO, but I have been thinking about it since then. So now it is time for a new debate (hope this doesn't get rough): are they??

actually in retrospect the welfare society that we (certainly democrats included) that we were drug into has created a society of helping those who are disadvantaged or are seen as at a disadvantage based on certain things, among them race. affirmative action in my opinion is unneccessary based on race and can cause some to believe white males are being discriminated against because we are truely the only ones who are not given the help that others are. but I don't think it is discrimination against us, just a faulty attempt to correct society using these raced based welfare actions instead of helping people out based solely on need and achievments possible.

He made some valid points. I was just curious what people thought about the issue.

A crew of Hispanic guys built the community of townhouses (and still building MORE as I speak...here in the area where I live) of N. Raleigh...plus it seems the maintenance staff is mostly Hispanic from what I've observed. BTW...most of them don't speak any English either...and at that only some possibly broken English. So yes, it seems there's an example of discrimination toward Caucasian males.
Eric
PS: In no way is this meant to sound racist...as I don't have a prejudicial bone in my body...I just find it interesting how Raleigh is like a Mini Puerto Rico (in a nice way that is).

But if one wants to live stateside then they need to learn the language to communicate w/ the English-speaking majority over here.

Most of the time that isnt really intentional discrimination - its a wage issue. Hispanics who cannot speak English or speak it well are very limited in their employment options, and illegals even more so.... employers can hire these people at ridiculously low wages for positions like construction, landscaping and maintenance. Most caucasian men who DO speak English would demand twice as much.
Personally, I dont think white men are discriminated against. They still make more than women for doing the same work!

lol
But I also think affirmative action should be need-based, not race based.

Well yeah but we have a minimum wage in this country for these kinds of reasons. so hopefully these construction companies aren't using worker for under minimum wage. Of course 8.50 per hour is probably what a construction worker should start out at minimum.

And WHO determines who is "needy"?
It would require a vastly larger Federal bureaucracy than we already have, and that's TOO BIG to begin with.
In government, ladies and gents, the maxim "less is more" should always apply. Constitutionally, the Federal Government is limited to but THREE venues;
1) Administration of justice
2) Preservation of internal order, and
3) Provision for national defense.
ALL OTHER POWERS belong to the States (collective) or the People (individuals)...in sum, Washington has its fingers in too many pies.

Ive worked for and around new home builders in southeast Texas for a few years now, and in my experience, they dont always pay their day laborers minimum wage. On top of that, most are only hired for the day or even for a few hours (something that would drive most workers crazy) and they are almost never offered employment perks like insurance and vacation time.

At the federal and state levels of labor law, equal opportunity is need-based AFTER all avenues of employment recruitment are exhausted for minorities or women.
The whole purpose of EEO is to level the playing field and extend opportunites to those who would not be afforded such in your everyday white man's world.
Now, if the white male
is the minority...?
More later, this is my kind of topic.
p.s. on fed or state funded construction, the average wage plus fringe benefits in my state (PA) amounts to about $30/hr. This is determined by the Labor depts and usually set by union standards although private industry has their say in the matter also.
They also set minority and women employment goals on govt. funded projects according to demographics. This is EEO, not affirmative action, please don't confuse the two.
