Hopefully it'll make my Halliburton stock go up! It's depressing seeing my stock value go down & down & down after their asbetos fiasco!

David... A friend of mine mentioned this to me a few weeks ago. At that time The White House was denying it. I am not pointing fingers, but it does seem convenient.

Halliburton has one of the best crisis teams in the oil industry. No big surprise there.

Then maybe it is just ironic.

Halliburton received a NO BID contract from the government for to extinguish oil-well fires and to repair the petroleum infrastructure in Iraq.

the contract calls for cost plus

which means that Halliburton will get paid for whatever costs they incur plus anywhere between 2%- 5% profit. (based on performance and quality of work)


now no company has EVER (dripping with sarcasm) padded costs to boost potential profits. so why should we fear Halliburton will?

What I smell is a bleeding heart blind Liberal who is subject to sophomoric idealism.
Have you any idea od how much money is funded TO the US Gov?if it were not for the services and goods they design and manufacture,we would not be in any position be the MegaPower we are.Period.
This is America,and IF you cannot or refuse to understand how capitoism works here and abroad to assist in tearing down repressive,backward and hedonistic Regimes,go to Russia and find out how a DYSFUNCTIONAL economy 'works'.You want corruption?Go to Russia or RED China...or North Korea.They have assests,minerals,oil,a work force and near ZERO freedom to choose how these assests can be best put to use.That is repression.That is Socialism to the Max.or is it Marx?Old Karl would be proud.
Now..let's look at Isreal for a moment.A shining example of how a tiny nation is trying to build a healthy economy..based on our economic system.I negotiate business contracts for a Corp there 'Telrad'.A Telecom firm,that has made some inroads into our Marketplace as well as Japan and Canada.Telrad produces handsets,software,Central Office Switches,Fiber Infrastructure applications,NT Forests,IT,IP and so on.
MANY American Jewish and Non Jewish Americans,some liberal,some not invest in Telrad.I did.I made money.They make money.Many Telrad systems are now being employed in the Isreali Military.Field Laptops,Infrared,Sighting Systems,Defense Systems,Tracking Systems.
It is NOT Government owned..it is however guaranteed and protected by CONTRACTS..that do and SHOULD blend a reasonable profit for...R&D!Profits are then reassigned back into the struture of the Corp.
Without R&D(Research and Development) recycling of shelfproduct would render the Corp useless.Ask a Kennedy or a Daschel how many offshore Corps have sweet tax harbors in Delaware or South Dakota?How many of our Public Servants can and do legally invest in our Nation's growth?
Most of them..within the limits of the Law.
So,if you wish to go on your Republican Witch Hunt,have fun,and don't forget to call home every now and then.It may be on a Telrad sytem.

but when you give a company with conections in the white house a contract that lets the company charge whatever they want plus 2-5%, it stinks to high heaven.

i see companies lay off thousands of workers and then give huge bonuses to the CEO and other execs everyday. these companies are not putting money into R&D put into the pockets of top management.

when i see the former head of Enron take home $100million dollars in the 12 months before they declared bankruptcy and claim poverty, i will cry out.

when i see verizons service decline while they claim it is because they are still behind because of 9/11. while at the same time laying off thousands and demoting thousands of others, calling them excess, but somehow finding money to give the CEO huge pay hikes and bonuses. (if they are so far behind why are they laying off workers?) i will cry out.

when i see a politically connected company get a green light to charge what ever they want, i will cry out.

Wannabehippie everything is not always crooked. A lot of companies are awarded "No Bid" contracts if they are uniquely qualified to perform a task or can be the most flexible with availability. In this case the object is to get the job done quickly not to spend 4-5 months in the GSA bid process. A 2-5% profit margin is very low by most standards. Costs for this type of contract are usually overssen by the GSA which happens to be one of the least political agencies of the Federal Government.

It is true,that some corporations are poorly run.It is true,some have greedy egomaniacs at the helm.It is not a perfect world my Eutopian Friend.Go to Berkeley some time.It's filthy!
I have been in Corporate boardrooms for 27+ years.I have negotiated many GSA Contracts over the years.Nothing here that I see is unusual.As a mtter of fact,it was the liberal Dems that wrote most of the GSA Contract schedules!
Moreover.My older brother(his name is David as well) was an FO for a major Oil firm in SF at Natomas Corp and Houston at Oxy and then Diamond Shamrock,which absorbed Natomas Corp. in the 80s.He started out as a young MBA with J Ray McDermott Corp(Offshore Oil Rigs) in New Orleans.I have travelled with him to the UAE,Scotland and Jakarta,Surabaya and Medan.It was dangerous at times,and less so at others.American interests are very influential in the world of Politics as you know,both here and abroad.As an independent Petro Consultant,He had an office in the WTC..I remind you sir..HAD.

As I said previously, I am not into Politics but must agree with AZ. I think it's just business..no dirty pool here. I think it's easy to find fault in an administration and it's members if you look hard enough. I support the current Administartion and it's members and feel they are doing a great job with the hand that was delt to them. I Think we should let them concentrate on The War In Iraq before we start any scandelous rumors don't you Bush, whether he be Conservative or Liberal deserves the respect and support of our nation and so does his staff..

It's stories like these that help to fire up the rumor that we're also in this war for the oil.

Capitalism can bring out the best (achievement) and worst (greed) in people. We've seen the worst come out ever more frequently be it Enron, Arthur Anderson, Worldcom, etc. Due to their greed, thousands of people lost their jobs, investments, pensions, etc.

just because a war is on, does not mean my voice will be silenced when i see a wrong in my eyes being done by our government

i support our troops fully. i cheered when they went into afganistan to get Al Qada.
but if i see our president or vice president doing something wrong i will continue to speak out.

i backed up my statement of corporate greed and corruption with examples from Enron and verizon. there are thousands more examples.

the contract that Halliburton got was not just short term. it includes provisions to rebuild the infrastructure of the Iraqi oil fields. that could potentially take years, depending on the level of damage done.

i did not accuse cheney of being bloodthirsty. i said a company that he was once head of, received IMO a contract based on that relationship.

war profiteering is nothing new. it happens in every war. it is not the 2-5% profit that i oppose, it is the fact that Halliburton will not have to justify their costs, thereby giving them a blank check.


as i said before if i see a wrong, i am going to cry out, war or no war.

supporting our troops does not mean acting like sheep or turning a blind eye to potential wrong doings by our government. in fact during war time a more careful eye must be kept.
