Senate slashes proposed tax cuts
Budget blueprint would slice Bush request by more than half
MSNBC STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
WASHINGTON, March 25 — The Senate unexpectedly reversed itself Tuesday, voting to slash more than half of President Bush’s proposed $726 billion tax cut and dealing a blow to the keystone of his economic recovery plan. The vote was a major victory for Democrats. These lawmakers — joined by some GOP senators — have been arguing that a tax cut of the magnitude Bush wants makes no sense at a time when federal deficits are expected to surge and when the country is engaged in a costly war in Iraq.

i got an idea, how about no tax cut at all? it is going to mainly affect the wealthiest americans and not provide a real immediate stimulus effect onto the economy, which is what really is needed
from a article i read dick cheney would save over $300,000 if the tax cuts were fully implemented.

This is a shame.
It doesn't mainly affect the wealthiest. It affects ME, the little guy!!! (well, girl)
However, of course a rich person will get back more than me......they pay more than me in taxes!!!

yeh but the rich usually save most of their money...that's how they stay rich. We will use it to buy overpriced gas so its not really saving us money on anything anyways.

We have to pay for this war somehow. I think it's one of the most fiscally responsible things that's been done in Congress in months. Whatever money we would've received back in tax cuts would've gone back out to pay for the war, deficit, etc.

Yeah, it is nice to get that rebate and have our taxes cut even further but...

I agree...If there are thousands of soldiers risking their lives overseas for me, the least I can do is help pay for the war. It is funny to me...people want things, but they don't want to pay for them Oh well!

That's true...we need to pay for the war.
Everyone just remember this when the economy isn't recovering as quickly as it should.

Well...any recovery would be the state some of us are in now. Not blaming anyone, but any economic recovery would be welcomed...slow or not!

yeh...cuz you can't get mad that the dems struck down the military salaries bill and then also get mad that we aren't getting a tax cut. Use the tax cut money to pay for that.

Well if France would pay us all the interest they owe us we could fund this war!! Look that one up, they owe us loads of it. All Congress needs to be responsible for is making France PAY UP!

I heard that too sunny....There are many ways to fund this war without raising taxes. Number one....stop sending aid to ANY country that doesn't back the US on this war.
Slashing our tax cuts is actually raising our taxes.

Oh if only it were that easy! Do you realize how much money we owe other coutries?? It is a bundle. So pointing out France and making them pay would be unrealistic.
