Breaking News: Worst Fears May Be Realized

This story just broke on cbsnews.com about 15 minutes ago... Here it is.
(CBS) U.S officials tell CBS News Correspondent David Martin that the Iraqis have drawn a red line on the map around Baghdad, and once American troops cross it, the Republican Guards are authorized to use chemical weapons.
Word of the chemical threat came as U.S.-led forces clashed with Iraq’s elite fighters for the first time about 50 miles south of Baghdad. U.S. Apache helicopters fired on the guard to soften them up for ground forces heading north to Baghdad

We better crank it up and win this ASAP. Time to knock out their tv stations, to start carpet bombing, using napalm, and all the good stuff.
BTW, would rain dissipate a chemical cloud? For you weather experts: does cloud seeding work?

I was aware of that at 6pm during our local CBS news. Ret Colonel Lawrie had informed us about the red zones around Baghdad (WFRV talks to Colonel Lawrie on a daily basis)

The actual use of chemical weapons is much less precise than most peoples perception. Wind, rain and even sunshine greatly reduce the effectiveness of the chemical weapons. Most have a fairly short life once expended. Anthrax is much more persistent. One of the reason that we are hitting their artillery so hard is that this is the most likely delivery platform. We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Not good news. I just pray they do refuse the order, although i think it rather unlikely the will refuse.
Lord please protect those troops.

OMG...only 27 miles now? I was away from news from about 3pm until a couple of hours ago so I missed a lot. When I'm home, Fox News is on, but I've been pretty busy lately and can't seem to keep up.
I pray they won't use chemicals on our troops, but I'm afraid they will.

I'm glad to hear that he has publicly admitted to having them to use, but I hope we can take him out with air strikes before he does. This has been what was expected all along by our military brass - he'll use this when he's backed into a corner. I wonder what the rest of the UN thinks?

weapons (unless you use Ricin or Botulinus Toxin [BOTOX]) are primarily a terror weapon as their use will not immediately disable or kill troops. Chemical weapons will, but the Meteorological conditions that will allow a lethal concentration to stay in the battle field long enough to be effective are limited and a sandstorm situation is not one of the patterns where they can be used. Basically, right now the weather pattern over Iraq which features a good deal of turbulence and instability is not one where Chemical weapons will be effective if used.
