ChannelCincinnati.com

1:46 p.m. EDT June 24, 2004 - Two local teenagers were killed in an accident in New York Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened on Interstate 90, the New York Thruway, in Minden, N.Y., just before 5 p.m., according to the New York State Police.

Investigators said the driver of the car, Craig Starkey, 18, of Loveland, Ohio, veered off the side of the road and then overcorrected, causing to car to roll over several times.

Starkey and a passenger, Tyler Linne, 18, of Loveland, Ohio, died in the crash.

Ryan Robinson, 18, of Milford, Ohio, was taken to the Albany Medical Center with a severe head injury.

Starkey, Linne and Robinson were not wearing seat belts and were thrown from the car, police said.

The fourth person in the car, Mark Fischer, 17, of Loveland, was taken to Little Falls Hospital with minor injuries.

The recent high school graduates reportedly were headed to Maine on vacation.

What is even sadder is this keeps happening in the Cincinnati area. And now we have two teens from this area die in NY. Tragically we've had at least a dozen teens die this past school year alone - in car crashes. One community/high school I think lost 4 students. Just two days ago a teen died in the Clermont County area (just east of Cincinnati). I just don't know what the answer is. However I firmly believe 15.5 is too young to get your temps. I held my daughter back until she was 16. Boy was she happy about that decision - not! Now she's a good driver and she's 2 days away from turning 17. Somewhere between 15.5 and I'd say 18, teens need a lot more driving experience than they're getting. So sad.

The saddest thing about this is had they been belted in they probably would have survived. If you think being thrown clear of a wreck increases your chances of survival think about this: When you are ejected you will be traveling at the same speed your car was(inertia). Then you are gonna land somewhere...hard. and theres a good chance you will be killed or crippled for life. All because you didnt take a few seconds to fasten your seat belt.

George - yes they would have survived. One teen in this specific car crash had his belt on, and he's going to live. Another has severe head trauma and tragically the other two did not make it. I'm praying for the boy still in the hospital.

This very thing happened to my husband's family - our 16 year old nephew died almost 2 years ago, he was the only one out of 4 friends w/o his belt on, on their way to a school service project (early Sat. morning, no alcohol involved). The driver decided to do some hill hopping on the way to the event. Our nephew was ejected and died in the air while trying to get to an ER. I just don't think my husband's family will ever completely recover from his loss. He is one of 16 grandchildren and we miss him so much to this day. We all still speak about him, as if he's watching out for us all. His parents tried in vain to get him to wear his belt, even with the family and forgave the driver. That took such grace and courage! I think what makes an impact are when teens who survived a terrible crash like this, go into the high schools and speak directly to students. All the talking/preaching in the world from parents and teachers won't do a thing. When one of their peers speak, they listen.

I gotta agree here...you need to wear your seatbelt at all times whenever in a car...this will apply to my little brother Mark who got his learner's permit today ...and just for future reference, don't EVER use the word cripple...I take offense to it BIG TIME...this is to everyone, not just the author of the post which used this term...

For those wondering what to use instead of the term cripple, I would strongly suggest, in the case of the post above, using something to the effect of "you might wind up in a wheelchair"...I am in a wheelchair, and hearing someone use the "c word (how I'm referring to cripple here)" really inflames me...any other word is fine with me just not that one...

Jeremy - I knew what you meant by your previous post about the c word. But perhaps others don't know your situation? Also, it is helpful for someone who is disabled to point out what bothers you. Thanks for pointing this out to some who just may not mean harm, but cause harm without intending to.
