Son Stores Dad's Body For Months

MELBOURNE, Fla -- A 27-year-old Melbourne, Fla., man reportedly stored his father's plastic-wrapped body in a storage facility for more than three months because he could not afford a funeral, according to WKMG-TV in Orlando.
Police said Sean Silver's father, Melvin, 64, died of natural causes on March 12 in a Kissimmee, Fla., hotel where he was living with his wife.
"He got his father dressed and left his father in the hotel with his mother for a few days," Melbourne Police Department spokesman Sean Riordan said. "From that point, funeral arrangements needed to be made."
However, Silver admitted to police that he did not have the money for a funeral, so he wrapped his father's body in plastic bags and stored him at the Michigan Avenue Self Storage in Kissimmee. The body remained at the facility for three months.
"It's unusual you are going to be storing a body for that period of time," Riordan said. (ya think?)
Last week, complaints about a foul odor coming from the storage unit forced Silver to move his father's body in a rented U-Haul truck. Silver parked the truck containing his father in front of his home until neighbors began to notice a foul smell.
Police said they are certain that Silver does not suffer from mental illness -- he just didn't realize he could ask for help if he didn't have the money, WKMG-TV reported.
Improperly disposing of a body is a misdemeanor, but since Silver cooperated with police he will not face any fines or jail time, according to the report.
