Dental Woes (Part 2)

Remember a couple of months ago I had a root canal? Well the crack in that tooth (the reason for the root canal in the first place) spread and the tooth broke in half! Today I had it extracted because it was beyond hope. My family dentist, when he gave me the referral to the oral surgeon, could only say, "well sometimes that happens." Sheesh, I'd like to have failures be that routine in my job! My insurance benefits are shot for 2004, so I'll have to wait until calendar year 2005 before I can even think of an implant or bridge, if then, even. Well at least I can feel at home at flea markets and county fairs.

You'd feel at home in eastern KY also, Ed.

You could always move to West Virginia. Ed, going thru all that pain and money just to have the tooth break in half would get me very PO'd.

You need to ask the dentist for at least half back!!!! It just happens??? How about maybe it shouldn't have been done that way in the first place?? I'm not dentist, but it sounds fishy to me. Oh, you'd fit right in here in E Texas too!

Ed - ouch! LOL at the county fair analogy.
I hear you on dental woes, I really do. I chipped a tooth a few months ago and the new crown set me back $860. Would have been more if they hadn't been able to build it in the office, I was told. Thank goodness it didn't need a root canal. Funny thing was that the temporary cement they put on the chipped area until the appt. could be scheduled held so well, I began chewing on that side again. Even gum! I was seriously tempted to skip the whole thing. That dab of dental cement sure held strong. I even joked - can we leave it this way? LOL
We don't have dental insurance, never have and never will. Hubby works for a small company, we're lucky to have the med insurance that we have (which is lousy, BTW). At my last checkup I said I wanted to come in once a year from now on. Dentist said no you really should come in every 6 months. So I just compromised, when the receptionist went to book me April, I said no, how about July?!!! She knew I'm sure. I told my entire family, we really need to book our appts. spaced out like this, forget that 6 month rule. My appt. is coming up and I'll get that lecture again, not buying it though. No way!

I'm shocked at the cost of dental insurance! Here at UTMB, it's a mere $1.50/mo for HEALTH insurance (obviously, for me alone -- no spouse or kids) and it costs $26/mo for dental. WHY?

I think you'd feel more "at home" in those places if you kept that half tooth!
That's ashame Ed. I'm glad that you were able to get it extracted quickly.

Duck,
In answer to your question about why dental insurance is more expensive.
I work in the Dental Insurance Industry. Usually it is because employers do not pay as much of a percentage of the insurance. Just an idea.
Who is your dental insurance with?
