Dodge Ball anyone?

Anyone have any stories about playing dodgeball in school when you were younger.
I thought of this since the movie is coming out soon and it reminded me of playing it in the playground before school and at recess every day. The game was brutal even if it was elementary students throwing the ball. Could never get any girls to play cause some one was always getting hit in the face or back of the head trying to "dodge " the stinkin ball. I remember a few guys would really wind up, use their whole body and throw it like a discus to get some pretty good velosity on it including grunting  . You really didn't want to try to catch those ones.
I can see why they do not allow the game to be played in most schools any longer.

I remember playing dodgeball. My friends and I would hide behind other people, lol. The game that I really loved was four square. Sweet memories of childhood..... :)

When I was very young it was fun, but when we got a little older and some of the guys decided they had to prove themselves by hurting others throwing as hard as they could, like Eric said, it no longer was fun and I just quit playing it. Got called sissy, etc., but I wasn't getting hurt or contributing to their idiocy.

Four square was a blast and I was darn good at it. Good memories for sure Jen.

There was though...a fun game during recess that I recall having at least witnessed (was too shy myself to get in on it...as one of the 2 guys)...but anyway, at a particular grade school in OH...there would be a girl standing between 2 guys and she'd be holding their hands...one guy would then swing her toward him and plant one on her lips and then the other guy would swing her toward him and do the same! :D But of course I was TOO blasted shy to take part w/ the cute chick...oh well, it still made for nice entertainment.

I remember playing Dodgeball in gym class in Elementary School... I was always one of the last to be picked because I was very small. I did pretty good considering my size.. I wasn't afraid to try and catch the ball and made people go "out". I remember being hit in the face a few times and that wasn't fun because I wore glasses.

They have a new version of dodge ball being played now. They're organizing teams and leagues even! They had a short piece about it on Good Morning America the other day. Bring it on! :-)

The movie "Dodgeball" is great. Saw it today.

Dodge ball is fun, until you get hit in the face...

I loved playing dodgeball in school. That was one of the few things I was good at!

It was also a great way to "payback" someone that pissed you off!

Ahh yes...dodgeball. Where winners were winners and losers were losers. In those dark ages before political correctness and equal outcomes. HIT 'EM IN THE FACE!!!! KILL 'EM!!!!

At our elementary school, kickball was THE game, until a couple car antennas got broken in the adjacent parking lot.

Our recess was on a paved area next to the school. One end of it was a hill and in the winter, we'd "skate" down the hill. It was sort of like surfing in our shoes. It's a wonder that anyone is still alive.

Four square involved a large chalk-drawn square dissected into four smaller squares, a dodge ball or similar soft bouncy ball, and four players -- one in each square and several feet apart. The player in square #1 would serve the ball by bouncing it in his/her square and over to another square. The next player would tap the ball with an open-palm (or two) to the next square. If the ball didn't bounce in the "tapper's" square first, it was a foul. If the person receiving the tap missed the ball before it bounced in their own square, they were sent over to square #4 and everyone moved up a square. Square #1 was always the server's square and the ideal place to be. But if the server missed the ball upon its return to his/her square, then the server had to go to square #4 and the player in square #2 became the server is square #1.

As we got older, we quit playing the simple way. We started picking categories like "TV Shows," "Bee Gees songs" (hey, it was the 70's :) ), "Bodies of water," or what have you. Each time, you bounced the ball, you had to name something in that category without repeating a previously mentioned item and without stopping and holding the ball to think about it. If you stopped or bounced the ball and didn't have an answer as you bounced it and it got to the next person, you were out. :)
