For some odd reason this computer lately has been rebooting itself ON ITS OWN.

Any fixes or suggestions on how to fix that?

btw its a windows xp pro made by HP.

Have you checked to see if you have a virus?

What is the error message you get?

Go to http://nhcwx.com and on the left handside scroll down and there is a virus block it has removal tools!

Sounds like you got the Sasser worm, Harry. It spreads via Internet and not through email.

It affects Windows systems higher than Win98. I
recall reading about how it makes computers reboot after less than a minute.

Hey Harry. I just dealt with that virus earlier this week. What a pain, my own virus scanner couldn't find it. So, I used a free virus scanner called Housecall. It found the virus and deleted it. Here's the link: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ By the way, I don't know how often your computer is rebooting, but mine was every 3 minutes. I had to start it up in safe mode to run the virus check. Good luck.

Yep...sounds like a virus to me. The link Jen provided is a good one and should solved your problems.

I have tried all of those.

And Steve i dont see the link your talking about either.

And duck and mrschad it doesnt happen that often as what the sasser supposedly causes. Maybe twice a night.

Harry if it's not Sasser then it could just be a hardware problem, most likely memory. Have you made any changes to your system right before this started? These could be either new hardware or new software. One idea would be to use XP's "System Restore" tp roll back your configuration to before the reboots started.

You just upgraded Windows didnt you Harry?

This is my best guess as well MF. And as well what i am hoping is not the problem.

I have alot of memorey though which i dont understand. I am only using like 8% of availible space on this computer.

No i am on a different computer then i was on out in Ohio. This one here i got with the windows xp a couple of years ago.

You could have a bad memory chip Harry. I would try the system restore first though.

I just tried what Steve said. See if that helps. I am trying at all cost to avoid using that system restore in any way shape or form.

I will let everyone know how all goes.

BTW Steve i did the stinger scan but the thing didnt tell me if i had anything? I wanted it to show so i would know if i had to turn the system restore off as it suggested i do. Like i said i am trying hard to avoid messing with that.

Yes turn off system restore.The reason is if you have a virus it is very likely it will be restored when you use the system restore application. Mutations!Mutations!
