Hi all, haven't been around much.

My dad found out that he is going to Afghanastan. He leaves sometime this weekend from Georgia. And he'll be gone for a year and a half.

Another reason why I haven't been online much is I finally found a girlfriend. Her name is Steph, and today marks the 1 week anniversary, actually. We haven't gotten a photo together yet, but i'll post her picture.

David - so sorry to hear your dad has to serve overseas. But I'm sure you're very proud of him just the same. We are here at Storm2K! My niece's husband (now they're divorced, sadly) was in Iraq for over a year. It was such a trying time, we all prayed constantly for him. Sent many, many care packages. Save your shoeboxes! That's what we sent items to him in. I'm sure your dad will ask for very specific items. But if not, and you need good ideas, PM me. I kept a really good list handy that my daughter's school passed out, but I think we've lost it. Some items I never would have thought of - one was instant iced tea. They would pour it in their water bottles and with the temperatures in the 100+, highest was 131, it brewed instantly. When he came home, he thanked me several times for the tea. Another item he really used were good white absorbant sox. But again, wait til he gets there and then you'll hopefully know what to send. I miss sending packages actually - if you'd like us to send him something, think about it. If you didn't want to post his address over there, you could PM one of us.

Congrats on your girlfriend too! Very happy for you.

Mary

The newest emails I have gotten:

Hi David:

We made it in last night here to Bagram, and I got the first decent
nights
sleep I have had in 3 days. We need to convoy to Kabul this morning at
10:00, so we were instructed to get our Kevlar and body armor out for
the
trip. Not what I wanted to hear, but rules are rules. Every GI here
has a
loaded M-16 or 9MM Pistol on them. Vehicles have mounted SAWs or 50mm
machine guns on them. This is the real thing. Kind of an eye opener!

-----

Hi David:

Well, we made it finally. We had a small scare on the way up, but
everything worked out. The 3rd vehicle in our 4 vehicle convoy had a
flat
tire, so they and #4 vehicle stopped. I was in the lead vehicle, and
we
went about 5 miles with only seeing the 2nd vehicle. We finally turned
around and found them, and every soldier was out of the vehicles with
weapons locked and loaded on a perimiter around the downed vehicle.
Kind of
different, but we all made it here safe.

-----------

Everything else here in Topeka is okay. I'll try to get a new picture and bio in to you all as soon as I can. :)
