I wish you the VERY best, Lyle...I had 'em throughout my jr high and high school years!

The sticklers, rubber bands, wax, etc., ...sure am glad it's BEHIND me!! :D

Poor guy!

Eric

PS: Don't they have a new kind of braces that are transparent and hopefully more comfortable nowadays? :) No more going through torture like those of us in past decades.

I just got mine off about 8 months ago. Never been happier. I had them 3 years. It wasn't bad EXCEPT when you had to brush them(because EVERYTHING you can imagine gets stuck :x ) and when you go to get them tightened. The day I got them on was probably the worst day of my life.

Good luck, you'll need it. :)

Yes, they do have the invisible braces now, HOWEVER, my teeth were REALLY messed up. The invisible stuff is only for teeth who just need a little work.

HD - good luck. I've been thru this twice now, with my daughters. If you read this before your appt., take some Motrin first or right afterwards. Later your mouth will hurt without it. One had them on only 18 months, so that wasn't too difficult a stage. My youngest however has had a very rough time getting used to her braces. Pain, discomfort, sores, you name it. It's not been easy. She's going into her second month and will soon get something called a Herbst applicance too, that will jut her lower jaw out into the position they want. In time her bones will fill in the gap, in her jaw. Good thing they allow me to make payments! You can make a mixture of half water/half peroxide if you get blisters in your mouth too. Swish that around a few times. Very soothing. Hope it goes well.

Also, since it may be a bit more difficult to brush your "incarcerated" ivories
...a good swish with some Biotene wash would feel nice to your mouth, too...
along with brushing. :)

Goodluck! I had braces for 3 years during middle school and highschool. Not the most fun, but the end results were amazing! I got the "Best Smile" Superlative during my senior year of Highschool. I always thought it was funny that my smile was so nice b/c of the braces.

I think it's a little late to wish you luck, so how did it go? :)

Hope all goes well, HD. The long term benefits will certainly outweigh the short term discomfort.
They have all kinds of colors these days too. It's less of an embarrassment than it used to be. Kids think it's cool! 8-)
Don't forget to post a new pic in the gallery!

Well, they actually didn't get to put the wires in, because I need 4 teeth pulled, which will get done next week. There is too much crowding right now for them to actually start the process. But I got everything else done! Luckily I'm not in any pain, because tomorrow I have to drive me and my brother to San Antonio. Thanks for all the well wishes!

Ewwww... the next worst thing. Teeth pulling.

How old are you?

I had that problem too. My baby teeth stayed around longer than they should have(some of them) and then on the bottom in the middle 4 teeth were stacked up one behind another, and the braces had to straighten that out.

I've had braces for about 2 years now...they will probably be on for ANOTHER 2 years. The orthodontist said I'm an "unusual case." :D

It takes a while to get used to the feeling of them, but once you do, it's not bad...it only hurts a little when they tighten them.

Well, I'm turning 18 in less than a month, so I'm a little late in getting the braces. My teeth have been crooked for about 5 years I guess and only this year did I finally get up and go to the dentist myself and tell them I needed braces. Oops, turns out I need fillings and teeth extractions, including wisdom teeth removal which I did in April, so...

But I'm ready. I can't imagine anything being worse than wisdom teeth removal, so this shouldn't be bad.

I was fortunate that i only needed them on my bottom teeth. I think that I had ythem on for about 2 years. They were STEEL baby - no colors for my braces were available back then!

Have a safe trip little brother. I know you wanted to get those braces on and over with, but it will happen soon enough.

Please be careful driving this weekend.

HAHA... I had the choice of colors too. Didn't really care. Had Blue most of the time.
