PHOENIX – He may be leaving Arizona, but he’s not leaving Channel 12. Arizona’s favorite meteorologist, Sean McLaughlin, is packing his weather maps and heading to New York City. McLaughlin has been named weather anchor at MSNBC, NBC News’ 24-hour cable channel, to provide coverage of national weather events weekdays between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. In addition, he’ll serve as weather anchor for the Sunday edition of NBC News’ Weekend Today (6-7 a.m.), with Campbell Brown and Lester Holt. McLaughlin’s last newscast at 12 News will be Wednesday, May 26 at 10 p.m. He’ll assume his new responsibilities at the network in early July.
"Sean is multi-talented, and that's what we look for at MSNBC," said Mark Effron, Vice President, News Daytime Programming. "He can communicate important and potentially life-impacting weather news, and will report from the scene of major weather stories. He has a way about him that connects with all kinds of viewers."
“For more than 10 years Sean has been a key contributor to the station’s success with his expertise in weather and energetic presentation and as an all-around quality team member both on and off camera,” said John Misner, Channel 12 President & General Manager. “While we’ll miss working with him on a daily basis, we’re pleased our network recognizes Sean’s outstanding contributions and that he’ll continue to have a role on Channel 12. We are fortunate to have an experienced weather team in place that is ready to take on new responsibilities. As we enter the monsoon and fire seasons, we are very confident in our weather team’s ability to warn our viewers of dangerous weather and to do accurate local daily forecasting. Amy Brooke with 12 News Today, Bill Kelly at 5, 6 & 10 p.m. and Ron Meritt on weekends give 12 News viewers professional, detailed forecasting 24/7.”
A nationwide search will begin to identify McLaughlin’s replacement. In the interim, 12 News Meteorologist Bill Kelly will assume the weekday weather position and is a candidate for the job. Kelly joined 12 News last year as a weekend meteorologist and the primary fill in for the weekday evening newscasts. He received his certificate in broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University and has been certified by the National Weather Association. Before coming to 12 News, he covered weather in Cincinnati, Sacramento, Medford, Oregon and Eureka, California.
"The move for me is bittersweet," said McLaughlin. "For the past 12 years I've worked alongside some of the best people in the business who are also great friends. I met and married my best friend and together we had a beautiful daughter. The opportunities Channel 12 gave me have prepared me for this challenge. I'm glad I'll still be able to be part of the 12 family, even if it's from New York."
